Did you remember the saying “boys will be boys?” It usually came from a teacher or parent after two boys got into a fight or when a boy was pulling on a girl’s hair just “because he liked her.” This leads to the question “Why do adolescent girls mature faster than boys?” From the body to the mind, we women are on the fast track while men are still in the Dark Ages. For the majority, girls start acting more mature earlier than boys. Most scientists will agree that the reason girls mature faster than boys is because of earlier brain reorganizing, earlier development in the womb, as well as the society that we all grow up in.
A lot of research has been done on why girls mature faster than boys starting in the womb and ending in adolescence. The research that I have found are accounts from 1989 to 2013. Many researchers believe that the main cause of girls acting more mature is the fact that our society pressures them more and they must conform to do better or be socially shunned. The textbooks Developmental Psychology: Childhood and Adolescence and Boys, Girls And Achievement: Addressing the Classroom Issues both include sections on society and what is conceived as normal across the board. One issue they address is that the majority of girls are taught from basically from birth that they should either hate or not care about their bodies, and the majority of boys are taught that their bodies are perfect and nothing is wrong with them. This is evidenced by a recent
They have a hard time finding who they are as a person. Adolescence is a period of time where kids are putting into circumstance that are hard to understand until they go through them hardship themselves. In “Saplings in the Storm” girls were analyzed to give better understanding of girl’s emotion when they are going through adolescence. Stated in the article, “In early adolescence, studies show that girls’ IQ scores drop and their resiliency and optimism and become less curious and inclined to take risks. They lose their assertive, energetic and “tomboyish” personalities and come more deferential, self- critical and depressed” (19). Girls try to fit the social stands of being a “girl” and in the end they bring themselves down mentally. Adults don’t understand the social stand because they aren’t completely the same anymore. In today’s society girls have to grow up so fast. Girls start wearing makeup at a young age, start wearing scandalize clothes, and have sexual encounters early. Having to go through all these mild stones may make it hard to be themselves and have
Boys normally begin adolescence at around 14 years of age which is sometimes later than most girls. When they have reached the end of this growth period however they are usually bigger than girls. Their body shape will change as their muscles grow and they will develop body hair. Their strength and co-ordination will increase greatly and their voice will change to become deeper. In the early stages of puberty testicles and scrotum will begin to grow and penis growth will start later but will continue for longer.
Thesis Question: President Herbert Hoover is often undermined and overlooked as an idle predecessor in comparison to the renowned Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Many people believe that it was Hoover’s lack of action that brought America to its knees before the Great Depression. Should Herbert Hoover be defined as the ineffective president accountable for the aftermath of the Stock Market Crash of 1929 or did he actually play an important role in alleviating the economic turmoil, but simply went unrecognized for his heroic contributions?
Through the ages of 13 - 19 years a child/young adults brains development will increase in line with their co-ordination and reaction times. For girls by the age of 14 puberty will be complete and periods will be starting whereas with boys puberty will be between the ages of 13 – 16 years and they will become physically stronger than girls.
Slaby and Frey also found that boys tend to reach gender consistency before girls. This difference can't be explained by Kohlberg, since the rate of cognitive maturation is the same for both sexes. This suggests that other factors, apart from cognitive changes, must be taken into account when explaining gender
From twelve a child begins to move into the sensative physical develpment faze of puberty, this is a time when a childs body will physically begin to change into an adult. This adolescent stage normally begins earlier in girls as they begin to grow breasts and their bodies become curvier, they will also start their periods at at an average age of thirteen but this varies greatly. Boys tend to developement later than girls but they continue to grow. Whilst grils tend to stop growing around fifteen, boys may continue to grow into their late teens. They can also expect their voices to drop and facial hair begin to show.
2. Social development: At this age they may become self-conscious as they notice changes in the body shape and odour. Children are more independent and start move away from parents and close to the peer group. Many teens develop very close friendship with the same sex. And most also develop interest in opposite sex but they will not be ready for a relationship.
The author of the article states that there is no better time than now to review how we are raising teenagers for many reasons. First and foremost there have been many strides taken recently to understand how the adolescent brain develops, strengthening ones understanding, and in turn, shedding light on errors made in the way adolescents are being raised in relation to their neuro-development. This means that because scientists have learned substantial information about the brain recently, it is important to reevaluate how parents are raising teenagers now more than ever. Second, according to the article it is a good time to review how we are raising teenagers because children are becoming adolescents earlier based on their physical maturation increasing faster each year, therefore it is important to examine why this is occurring. Finally, the author states that there is no better time to review how we are raising teenagers because of the recent discovery that the brain is malleable during adolescence due to neuroplasticity, meaning that the brain is able to be transformed during this time period solely based on the environment in which these individuals are exposed to, as per the article (Steinberg, 2014).
She mostly had students in her class right before they hit puberty, which eliminated many potential issues. Still, she noticed “girls tended to be better behaved. Boys [were] more of the troubled, really difficult one” (Huffman). Of course, studies have shown that, for most boys, “testosterone isn’t causing aggression, it’s exaggerating the aggression that’s already there” (Testosterone Rules). Carolyn also observed that “girls tended to be more studious; but a lot of the time really brilliant ones were boys. Girls tended to work harder, so more of them would have been better” (Huffman). This observation aligns with current interest in why girls perform better academically. The “last decade has seen a growing popular and academic obsession with boys’ underachievement” (Reay). Carolyn made specific efforts in her classroom to treat students fairly and equally, regardless of their gender or academic success. She also intentionally taught units on famous women and famous African Americans, hoping to ignite the same desire for equality in her students that she herself
Once again pointing back to Erickson’s theory, people want to belong (Class Notes, 8/25/15). When children are not informed of these changes and they begin to enter puberty they have no idea what is going on especially if they are earlier on than their peers. These children begin to feel left out and don’t know what to do. Same goes for those that begin puberty much later than their peers. The children begin to notice the changes occurring in their peers and nothing has happened to them so they once again feel left out.
From ages 6-11 you are considered early middle childhood. Around these ages you start changing your physical development by growing about 2 to 3 inches in height and 5 pounds in weight each year. A female body will mature quicker than the male body. Girls are slightly lighter and shorter than boys at ages 6-8, and then at age 9 it gets reversed. Around the middle childhood age the lower portion of the body is growing fastest, children appear to look long-legged. Girls end up having slightly more body fat and boys have more muscle. Between ages 6-8 the child should be able to do independent things like dress themselves, and tie their shoes. Children also start to develop more independence from their parents. It becomes important for a child
Donald J. Trump has been the Commander in Chief of the United States for a little over nine and a half months. In that time, Trump has been a megalomaniac, continuously using angry phrases , causing tensions with North Korea, affected our ties with Russia and getting the whole world angry at the promise to “Make America Great Again” at the price of our planet's health. According to a poll from CBS News 2017 News Tracker conducted by YouGov, About 72% of Americans now see Donald Trump as temperamental instead of a 37% who see him as presidential.(CBS)
Dobbs states that, “These traits may seem to add up to nothing more than foolish new stuff with friends. Look deeper, however, and you see that these traits that define adolescence makes us more adaptive, both as individuals and as a species.” During adolescence, the traits that make teens seem so erratic actually makes them more flexible which allows them to become smarter more successful adults. Dobbs then goes on to state that, “This long, slow, back to front development wave, completed only in the late teens and in the mid-20s, appears to be a uniquely human adaptation. It may be one of four most consequential. It can seem a bit crazy that we humans don’t wise up a bit earlier in life. But if we smartened up sooner, we’d end up dumber.” If humans matured faster than what is normal, it would only hurt children in the end. By allowing adolescents to mature at a natural rate allows them more time to mature which helps them to be smarter and more successful in the end. In conclusion, the time it takes and the traits acquired during adolescence helps individuals to become smarter and more successful members of
Adolescence is the distinct transitional stage between childhood and adulthood in human development, extending primarily over the teenage years and terminating legally when the age of majority is reached (Rathus, 2014). However in some instances, this biological, cognitive, social and emotional maturity may not be reached until a later stage and may be dictated by gender. Adolescence is characterised by rapidly changing and unpredictable behaviour (Freud, as cited in Rathus 2014), heightened and unstable emotions (Hall, as cited in Rathus 2014), disturbances in identity, the gradual development of one’s moral reasoning (Kohlberg, as cited in Rathus, 2014) and the gradual establishment of one’s independence. Several of these changes may occur at differing phases in adolescent growth. This development is categorized into three separate stages; early adolescence, middle adolescence, and late adolescence. Early Adolescence, commencing from the ages of eleven or twelve until the age of fourteen, comprises of several features such as rapid biological development and maturity, heightened stress levels and limited coping capabilities. On the other hand, middle adolescence, from the approximate age of fourteen to sixteen, involves the gradual cease of biological change, an increase in coping strategies and declined stress levels. Furthermore, late adolescence, commencing from the age of sixteen until the age of eighteen or nineteen, encompasses physical maturity, whereby the
Overall, girls get poorer education than boys, and become less aware of the world around them. Therefore, they become dependent on men, whether it is the father, the husband or the son.
