Genre is a pivotal factor in regards to any type of writing, whether it be about business, science, or even fashion (see Bawarshi; Berkenkotter & Huckin; Pare; Winsor). Literary genre is the term used to refer to any form of writing. There are many categories of writing such as fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Whether they come in the form of short stories, books, newspapers or even text messages, they are still deemed as ‘literary genre’. In previous classes (such as English 4 or English 101) it was required to know how to read, write, and analyze short stories, writings, poems, books, and more. The main genres worked upon were usually nonfiction such as biographies or autobiographies.

The paper will consider the similarities and differences among the literary forms of drama, poetry, and the short story. Certainly, an obvious similarity is that they are all forms of literature and as such have the great potential to affect people's hearts, minds, and experiences. Literature, when executive well, has the potential to change a person's perspective, inspire, or otherwise change who that person is and how that person thinks. This is a similarity that each one of these literary forms has in common off the bat.

In literature there are many different kinds of genres such as, short stories, novels, plays, etc. When authors write in these genres, they use many different styles of writing to describe the objects and point in their writing. Authors may use metaphors, similes, foreshadowing, and personification. For example Edgar Allen Poe in his short story “The Tell Tale Heart” where he describe a character that is mentally disturbed. The application of genre analysis and phraseology has great potential to inform this kind of research and practice, enabling us to receive a more thorough understanding of how language is used in a particular context and/or in a particular genre.
