AO Orchestra is a huge honor to even be able to audition for. I feel like that I belong in AO Orchestra because I am a natural born leader. During the month of April I attended a leadership camp called HIPP where I was taught leadership skills and what it takes to be a leader. From those leadership skills that I was taught I have learned to always put your best effort forth, be kind, be trusting, and to be selfless. I will put forth all of those traits that I have learned to make the orchestra better. I always put forth my best effort, I will always come in and out of class with a smile, and I help my fellow students if they need anything from grabbing a pencil for them to listening to see if they’re playing the piece or section correctly.
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 at the Berlin Philharmonie, gifted the audience with a masterful rendition of the movements within the symphony. The Symphony divides into three separate parts, in which the movements complement each other's characteristics. The symphony orchestra features a myriad of orchestral instruments featuring the Brass, Woodwinds, Strings, and Percussion families. Furthermore, the various movements throughout the performance utilize various musical concepts that bring the music to life. Albeit, the complexity of Mahler’s symphony, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra performed superbly throughout the performance.
On April 11, 2014 The Florida Orchestra performed Wolfgang Mozart’s Symphony No. 28 in C major, K, 200, David Diamond’s Symphony No. 4, and Johannes Brahms Quartet No.1 for Piano and Strings in G minor at the David A. Straz Center for the Performing Arts, Ferguson Hall in Tampa, Florida. Gerard Schwarz, guest conductor, led the Florida Orchestra for each of the compositions. According to The Florida Orchestra Program the list of performers for the violin is Jeffrey Multer, Nancy Chang, Jeffrey Smick, Lei Liu, Sarah Shellman, Lucas Guideri, Valerie Adams, Toula Bonie, Saundra Buscemi, Mary Corbett, Linda Gaines, Oleg Geyer, Cynthia Gregg, Linda Hall, Yan Jiang Lu, Evelyn Pupello, Claudia Rantucci, and Virginia Respess. The list of performers for the viola is Ben Markwell, Kathie Aagaard, Karl Bawel, Lewis Brinin, Alan Gordon, Alison Heydt, Kenneth Kwo, Warren Powell, and Barbara Rizzo. The list of performers for the oboe is Shawn Welk, Lane Lederer, and Jeffrey Stepehenson. Jeffrey Stephenson also performed during the night playing the English
I am part of the Godinez Black and Gold Marching band, and I have the official position of Wood Wind Captain. I lead the wood wind which consists of Clarinets, Flutes, Saxophones, and other instruments as well. I think through this experience it has helped me with my communicating and listening skills, I am now more aware of what people are capable and not capable of doing. During any school event in which we are a part of I make sure we act appropriately and show that our school is fun and mature.
This journal is about the musical piece composed by a man named Benjamin Britten titled The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. This piece was surprisingly interesting to me as it created different feelings of emotions through the instruments volume, sync, and rhythm. I do like various instrumental styles of music, however, I was hesitant about listening to a classical style orchestra. Throughout the piece it seemed the sounds would constantly change, which reminded me of the early black and white cartoons that relied on classical style music to show the emotions they were trying to make the audience feel. For example, I remember a scene from an episode of the old cartoon Popeye, when there was fast paced instrumental music in the background while Popeye was saving Olive Oyl from a dangerous situation and they both were running to get to safety. The xylophone from Bitten’s composition is what made me think of that exact episode of Popeye and Olive Oly running to get to safety.
Describe any past leadership positions in the QACPS Music Program and/or non-school related organizations. I used to be the trumpet section leader in Stevensville Middle School during 7th and 8th grade. I help out with the High School uniforms for choir and band ensembles. I got another person's solo in last season's marching show, because they were not able to attend a Tournament Of Bands. I had another solo during Jazz band last year, and worked very hard to make sure it sounded great.
I already have leadership experience within the SIHS band so I understand what is expected of me and what I need to do. When I was Flag Captain, I had the responsibility of keeping track of a section and I would like to do that for the entire band. One of my strongest traits is my musical abilities. When I started playing instruments, I played the viola. I did that for three years, but then once I got to high school, I wanted to not do just color guard, but concert band- so I taught myself the bassoon. Once it was time for jazz band I realized I probably couldn't play bassoon there (even though that'd be pretty cool) I decided I wanted to play saxophone so I taught myself that as well. Aside from my primary instruments if I can try any instrument to get a better understanding of it I definitely take the opportunity. With the different instruments I’ve been exposed to reading treble, alto, tenor and bass clef, which comes in handy when reading a score and helping certain sections. Since I can read and play different kinds of music I am able to help more people in band with playing and fixing their music which is beneficial for a Drum Major. I also like to listen to many styles of music like various classical genres or jazz. If I hear a song or solo, I get the music, then try to learn and perfect
Auer, Leopold. Violin playing as I teach it, New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1921.
I have been involved with music my whole life. I started playing violin at the age of 8, and my passion for music has only grown bigger since. As a result, this has lead to many leadership opportunities and I believe that this will aid me in fulfilling the responsibilities as president. For example, I was concertmaster of the CPES Orchestra, the LRIS Orchestra, the MTMS Orchestra and the 2015 LLMEA Middle School Orchestra. These positions taught me not only how to be a leading figure in an orchestra, but also how to communicate with the director, my section, and the orchestra as a whole. Furthermore, I spent the last three years mentoring children in music within the Music For Everyone
I am auditioning to be an officer because I believe I can make Company a great experience for everyone on it and be a strong leader and representative of Cottonwood Dance. I think that having a strong leader is fundamental to the success of a group. My physics teacher, Ms. Richey, is someone I look up to as a leader; she makes class fun and engages us while still clearly getting the information across. She is also very confident in her abilities and will straight up shut you down (kindly) if you are trying to make up a physics scenario that is not possible. She is so intelligent yet fun that I aspire to be like her when I have to be a leader. I believe I am qualified to be an officer this year because I have had a couple of different
Entering the Chicago Symphony Center my face must have looked completely memorized as I gazed at the design and architecture structure that was before me. The amount of intricate detail that was on the ceilings and trim work must have taken months to complete with a construction army. As I walked through the hall and stepped into the elevator the smell of fresh clean red carpets filled the air with a slight scent of floral. Before I entered the venue a punch size bowl of cough drops was to my left. The usher grabbed my ticket and escorted me to my seat right in front on the third level. The entire venue was covered with three basic colors gold, cream, and red. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1904, consists of three levels with the
Today, classical music by many can be seen as a dying genre of music. Not often do people attend concerts to be moved emotionally, for entertainment, or as a means of socializing. Though groups such as 2Cellos, Piano Guys, and the YouTube Symphony Orchestra have recently driven people back to concert halls and have them watching classical performances online. The YouTube Symphony Orchestra has made a significant movement to this genre of music by live streaming their performances (one in 2009 and the other in 2011).
The structure of this piece is the whole orchestra, flowed by the woodwinds, strings, brass and percussions. This arrangement happens twice, first highlighting each individual instrument with tempo and dynamic. The second time this arrangement is played the orchestra highlights the same melody with the various sounds each instrument makes. Closing Britten’s musical number in a fugue.
Wanting to be a part of that family-like bond they had, I auditioned sophomore year, but I did not get in. Naturally I was devastated, and my ego took a hit. But I used that year to further improve myself and my leadership skills. I went back into chorale and was able to help the freshmen learn their music as a peer tutor. During the spring I experienced something new by joining Women’s Concert choir. Finally, my junior year I made it. It took yet another year to help me become independent on my part. The class also taught me to work hard and learn how to manage my time. Finally my senior year, I was named section leader. As a section leader I am responsible for teaching my section their part by playing the piano. I am also responsible for answering anyone’s questions and making sure everyone understands important concepts and seeing that the group bonds with each other. Outside of school my duties are still performed. After school I am still a leader in Gospel Choir and in all of our rehearsals. If anyone needs me they can text me and I will help them. Not only has this position given me the opportunity to help my section, but also it has helped me to develop leadership skills that I
I have never been personally a fan of the romantic orchestra music but going to listen to a concert live is breathtaking. I attended the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra, Masterpieces concert with music director Fouad Fakhouri performing Igor Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms and Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No.1 in D major. There was a full stage of musicians and a complete choir to back it up.
The music played throughout all of the concerts adhered to be diverse. The instruments, the individuals performing, and the conductor all proved to be outstanding. The concerts proved to be interesting as I witnessed them, first hand.
