Andy Wirth Speaks to Madeleine Brand of KCRW on the Recent Drought Phenomenon Andy Wirth recently spoke to Madeleine Brand of the California based KCRW about the effects of drought on California ski resorts. Andy is a prominent personality in the resort industry; he is currently the President and CEO of Squaw Valley Ski Holdings. In the interview held on July 30, 2015, Madeleine began by pointing that drought had forced Californians to cut back on water usage by 27% compared to 2-years ago and placed scarcity of water as the number one concern in the minds of many in the state. Andy Wirth told Madeleine that his resorts remained profitable and resilient in spite of 20% drop in visitor numbers due to the devastating effects of what Stanford meteorologist call the “”ridiculously resilient ridge”. The occurrence, according to Andy prevented the pressure system from forming over the mountains, causing a reduction in the amount of precipitation that brings snow. Andy also affirmed that the mountain resorts under his watch were more than capable of withstanding bad weather because some 4000 acres of skiing surface out of the possible 6,000 acres were still in play. Some of the strategies Andy has proposed to keep the business viable include using modern techniques to manage snow and making more snow using science. The …show more content…
Madeleine also asked Andy about the future of his resort business and Andy promptly answered by affirming that his businesses have embraced the Stanford meteorological findings about the increase volatility of weather. In the final analysis, Andy vouches for an adjusted mountain resort and hotel industry business model that will lead to increased use of green energy and thereafter low carbon imprint. Andy told Madeleine that his grasp of various weather aspects stems from his years working as a fire ranger in New
He met a man named Dennis Fritz, and their similar lifestyles led to become good friends. They would hang out, get drunk, then do stupid things. After getting wildly drunk, Ron would find women to sleep with which got him charged of rape two times. Ever since then the townspeople and police hated him and saw him as a disgrace to the city of Aba. His bad reputation and the impatience of the court and community led them to quickly and without much evidence convict Ron Williamson and Dennis Fritz of the murder of Debbie Carter. Ron was sentenced to death row and Fritz was sentenced to a lifetime in prison.
It’s always good to start investing money at an early age, however, it’s a hard start. Many banks have improved interest rates as well as no opening fees to start a savings account. Stocks, such as health and technology are also currently going up. Billy should start by saving small amounts of money per week for two years and placing it in a savings account. He should also buy health and tech stocks, such as Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) and International Business Machines Corporation (IBM), and keep a diversified portfolio, along with buying bonds.
California has always had a warm climate, yet its supply of water has rarely been affected. In 2014 California’s water shortage issue truly began. Due to low amounts of snow in the winter in recent years, California has tried to equal out these shortages by drilling water from underground aquifers. Yet, underground aquifers recharge much slower than surface water sources. California has already made significant drawbacks to attempt to limit the amount of water they use, so these aquifers can recharge. But still resources continue going down and the Central Valley Aquifer’s water level is rapidly declining. Luckily, on April 7, 2017 the drought stage of emergency in California was ended. Yet the issue isn’t truly resolved. Glen MacDonald
The court should find that the evidence found against the defendant, Mr. Arnold J. Stewart, should not have been suppressed under the Fourth Amendment. The Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution states that “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.” The moment Stewart left his suitcase in the care of Mr. Holt, he gave him possession over it. In the case of United States v. Arango, 912 F.2d 441 (10th Cir. 1990), the court determined that the one who has the right to possession of personal property has the right to exclude others from searching it. In this situation because of Larry Holt’s growing concerns with the suitcase beginning left with him for longer than intended and the concerns of whether the suitcase contained a bomb, he did not exclude

Certain models predict that drought activity is expected to increase toward the end of the 21st century and particularly in the Colorado River Basin (MacDonald & Turner, 21260). When the dam was built in the early 20th century, annual flow was about 17.0 MAF (million acre-feet) at Lees Ferry, Arizona which is a few miles below the dam. Estimates calculating the past MAF of the Colorado River average to about 13.8-14.6 over the last 450 years. Thus, the dam was built in a period with an unexpectedly high MAF. Alarmingly in 2000 the river averaged less than 9 MAF. (Bolin, Seetharam, & Pompeii, 263). In 2002, the river reached a low of about 6.2 MAF (MacDonald & Turner, 21256). Some models estimate that the river could reach the range of 1.5 to 4.5 MAF in the next 30–50 years. (Bolin, Seetharam, & Pompeii, 271). The reduction of MAF in the Colorado River is due to drought. Droughts have been occurring throughout the 20th century with droughts from 1900-1904, 1924-1936, 1953-1964, and 1988-1991. These droughts are associated with warmer regional temperatures and the level of warming is deemed exceptional for the 21st century (MacDonald & Turner, 21257). Recently the Colorado River has experienced the lowest 5 year mean flows on record (MacDonald & Turner, 21257). If river flow is low, so is Lake Powell’s water level. One study suggests that Lake Powell have a 50% chance of receding to inoperable status by the 2020’s
Was Cameron occupying the car as defined by Mr. Frye’s automobile insurance policy by placing the car on a jack and running it backwards by placing a concrete block on the gas pedal if he continued to monitor the vehicle, kicked it repeatedly and leaned on it?
When is it considered appropriate to use class action lawsuits? Anytime a significant amount of people have been harmed or violated in the same or similar manner by the same individual or group, it is appropriate to file for class action. The question specifically posed in this case asks if it is appropriate to use class action lawsuits to challenge automatic phone calls related to elections.
Another one of the many problems that the severe water drought caused was it has a big impact on farmers, families, business, and many other people in the Sacramento area. In “Addressing California’s Droughts” it states that the harsh drought has been hurting a lot of Sacramento families, farmers, and small business that don’t do so well because of the drought which affects their business majorly (Addressing California’s Droughts). The CBS News explain that the State Department of Water Resources Director Mark Cowin says “there simply is not enough water in the system to meet the needs of the farmers” (Facing Drought,California Will Not Allow Water To The Farmers, Cities). It is also said that without the water on the surface the farmers have to pump water from underground aquifers (Facing Drought,California Will Not Allow Water To The Farmers,Cities). This happens to alter the farmers and their business because without the water for their crops they end up not having any business because they don’t have any crops grown to
[Thesis Statement] Lake Mead has suffered a drought for more than 15 years, causing Nevada residents to cut back on water usage.
In early May, 4299, the four defendants and Roger Whetmore entered a limestone cavern. A landslide occurred while the group was far from the cavern’s entrance, trapping the spelunkers inside. The only known entrance was the one blocked by the landslide. When the group failed to return home to their families, the Secretary of the Speluncean Society was contacted, and a rescue team was sent out immediately. The group of spelunkers had only brought very few supplies.
California is currently experiencing the worst drought in history and its not only affecting California – its affecting everyone. The California drought has become a slow movie disaster. You don’t realize how bad it is, until it hits you hard.
Governor Jerry Brown was on the Sierra Nevada Mountains and noticed that there was not snow on the mountains. And after seeing that is when he knew we had to start water restrictions in the state of California. The State Water Resources Control Board said that as California residents we must consume or limit water use by 25%. And Governor's plan of saving water would also include golf courses, replacing about 50 million square feet of lawn with drought-tolerant landscaping which would help everyone with water usage. The Chief of the California Cooperative Snow Survey Program Frank Gehrke and said that the ¨wettest¨ part of the year is around April 1 and is ending up to a close. When Gehrke goes to take the measurements of the snow he said,¨the
