George Heirens, William’s dad, and William’s mom owned a floral business, but due to the Great Depression, it went out of business. After several failed employments, his father found a job on the police force of Carnegie Steel Company, which he worked his way up to a special investigator. After their floral shop went out of business, William’s mother worked as a fancy pasty maker in a baker and then she went to designing and executing custom made clothes. William has a younger brother, Jere, he is three years younger than William. There is allegation that family history includes insanity, epilepsy, alcoholism and mental defectiveness.

William again went to Juvenile court and was placed on probation to go to St. Bede’s Academy in Peru, Illinois, per his parents’ request. He spent his sophomore and junior years at St. Bede’s Academy. During his sophomore year, his grades were “A’s” and “B’s,” but his junior year, his grades went from “A” to “F.” Just like in Gibault School for Boys, William was a loner; he did not have any close or confident relationship with anyone. A few days later, William was given “truth serum” illegally, without a warrant or his parents; and was interrogated by the police without any legal counsel. While under the influence of the “truth serum,” William claims “George” made him do the robberies and the “cobra killings.” After searching for “George” and coming up empty handed, the police later figure out that “George” in an alter ego of William. William claims he met “George” when he was thirteen years old. Police claim that, the handwriting on the wall at the crime scene of Frances Brown and the ransom not found at Suzanne’s been are the same; although, handwriting analysts never actually confirmed it was Williams’ handwriting on the wall and note. The Police also state, they found a partial finger print on the ransom note that belonged to William; but after finger prints examiners only found nine comparison points, which is 65% of the population and the law also requires twelve, for a conviction. William also took a polygraph test, in which he passed. Per his lawyers, William accepted a plea deal of three consecutive life terms to avoid the death penalty. Shortly after, William withdrew his confession and claimed he was innocent. He maintained his innocence for the rest of his life.
