Analyzing Peter Elbows 'Writing With Power'

Throughout my life, I have written multiple papers as assignments while learning throughout the process. Each time, I learnt from my mistakes and capitalized correctly. I’m currently a sophomore in high school; meaning I have plenty of time to expand my word bank and my knowledge on the art of writing. In Peter Elbows, “Writing with Power”, he emphasizes practices and techniques to help one develop into a more complete writer able to produce high quality essays. He states “…no matter how shrewdly you figured your audience and purpose…there comes the time when you need feedback.”(237)Many people make the mistake of not getting other peoples input on their essays. Another very common mistake made by writers is that they aim to write essays correctly the first time instead of creating second drafts. Second drafts are critical as your first draft is a solid foundation that can be improved upon further survey. Creating second drafts for essays is a very important step in constructing a solid essay; I have been taught to do so at school and I improve every time I write and will continue to grow in the future. In section 6 of the book “Writing with power”, Elbow talks about how to make your writing powerful. He narrates a scenario where one has a better written essay than another but the other persons essay has more power, therefore hooking its reader on. In order to achieve power in your writing, “…you must give readers either the style or the content they want, preferably both.” (279) In addition, he later states how you can get power through voice by having well ordered punctuation which helps the reader read the piece smoothly and in one
