The Old Wayne County Building is one of the last survivors of pre-Depression Detroit. The building was designed by Detroit architects John and Arthur Scott. Construction began in October 1897 and was completed in 1902. It is one of the nation’s finest surviving examples of Roman Baroque Revival architecture, as well as a mix of Beaux-Arts and Neoclassical style. The building was fraught with controversy from the beginning. Wayne County overpaid for the land by $50,000 about $1.27 million today. Then 96,000 pounds of steel and iron went missing. Also the contractor M.J. Griffin was accused of double-charging the county and using a cheaper granite than what the county paid for. There was an investigation but no one was convicted.
