The Old Wayne County Building is one of the last survivors of pre-Depression Detroit. The building was designed by Detroit architects John and Arthur Scott. Construction began in October 1897 and was completed in 1902. It is one of the nation’s finest surviving examples of Roman Baroque Revival architecture, as well as a mix of Beaux-Arts and Neoclassical style. The building was fraught with controversy from the beginning. Wayne County overpaid for the land by $50,000 about $1.27 million today. Then 96,000 pounds of steel and iron went missing. Also the contractor M.J. Griffin was accused of double-charging the county and using a cheaper granite than what the county paid for. There was an investigation but no one was convicted. The cornerstone
The Eshelman Building was built in 1872 in Clarence New York. It is currently located in its same position as 150 years ago where what is currently called the four corners. The builders of this piece of history are John and Jacob Eshelman and after that point their nephew, Andrew Eshelman took over. The building is 3 stories and each one had its own purpose. The first floor was the store and they sold clothing to hardware. The second floor was a 3,000 square floor apartment, or bed and breakfast where some political figures stayed during elections. There was an interior fire in the 1900s but luckily the beautiful exterior stayed intact for all of us to see today. The third floor was used as a stage for theater and entertainment and was
A new exhibit on the history of crime in Lake County, “Crime and Punishment”, is open for the summer at the Courthouse Museum in Lakeport. Stagecoach robbers, a notorious sneak thief and a gang of murderous miners are featured in the same building their sentences were handed out.
On April 19,1995 at 9:02 a.m, an explosion took place on the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma city. The Alfred P. These lives were taken away by the worst domestic terrorist attack on the United States soil and the first to be conducted at the center of the
The Idaho Falls 5th Ward Meetinghouse is an excellent example from a golden age in the history of building design and construction for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS). The landmark Art Moderne building is located in the southeast Idaho city of Idaho Falls, and was designed in 1937 by the architectural firm of Sundberg and Sundberg. The building was dedicated on March 25, 1945 by David O. Mckay, then 2nd Counselor to the First Presidency of the LDS Church. The building is unique in that it is one of a few remaining stylistically intact historic LDS ward houses still in use today in
The West Georgia Museum of Tallapoosa is a blast from the past for most of the older generation while the younger generations get to see how their grandparents or great grandparents got to live long before they were born. The overall theme of the museum is honoring and memorializing the old city of Tallapoosa. When exploring the little museum, there are displays of old stores and work offices such as a dentist office or a doctor’s office display from the 1800’s. These displays are interesting to look at because most of the stuff on display in each of these rooms are actual items from that time or very close to that era. When viewing these rooms, there is a button viewers can press which activates a narrator to tell them what they are viewing
The New Castle Court House in Delaware is the oldest courthouse in the United States. It has played an important role in major events throughout American history, like the reading of the Declaration of Independence and adoption of the state constitution. And now, since it has been turned into a museum you can walk down the halls and see where these momentous events took place. The Court House is also part of the First State National Historic Park, which works to preserve region's history and Swedish, Dutch, and English roots. While in the area, you can also visit other historic sites like the Read House and Gardens, Amstel House Museum, and Frenchtown Railroad Ticket Office. And if you book your stay in New Castle in one of these hotels or
American History never seemed interesting to me, especially when I was asked to choose an informative historic sighting. Many sites did not call my attention nor appeared to suit my interest, that is until I researched the The Bennett Place Farmhouse and discovered the history that hides behind this simple farmhouse. Fascinated by my trip, my perspective opened up to a variety of views and ideas about the battles and surrenders that resulted from the Civil War. The history of the site, the valuables and sighting, and my reflection towards the Bennett Place Historic Site all contributed to my understanding of the many surrenders that occurred during the great Civil War .
The Tarrant County Courthouse is a beautiful structure full of historical importance that deserves to be treasured. Tarrant County is the story of Indian battles, cattle drives, gunfights, and plantations. Railroads and high-tech assembly lines all happened here. The mission of Tarrant County Historical Commission is to “ensure that the story is saved, and savored for generations to come.” The commission meets regularly six times a year. Commissioners court, appoints two year terms. Commissioners operate their own by-laws, and are in close association with the Texas Historical Commission in Austin. “Tarrant County’s businesses today reach around the globe and the county’s commercial and industrial airports are among the country’s foremost international gateways.” Tarrant County was named after Edward H. Tarrant, a military commander, Texas Ranger, and an Indian fighter who was the man responsible for the removal of most Indians who lived in the area.
I agree with the students who want to change the name of the Forrest Hall Building on MTSU campus, because I think our students have the responsibility as those with the power to change this name since we don’t want to our state university to represent something hateful. When MTSU built its ROTC building in 1954, President Smith named it Forrest Hall in honor of Nathan Bedford Forrest’s reputation as an “interpid confederate cavalry leader who won fame with his brilliant raids. Maybe that was Forrest’s reputation in 1954, but in 2015 Forrest’s reputation becomes one of hate, racism, and violence. We do not want or need that at MTSU.
In recent years, Danville has received several honors, including a place on "Money" magazine's list of the best places to retire and the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Great American Main Street Award. The city prides itself on its ability to continually evolve, maintaining a proper balance between holding onto its history while thriving in the modern world. Part of this balance involves ensuring that paved surfaces are properly maintained so that the city always presents a good impression to the area's residents as well as the many visitors that come to Danville to shop, tour the historic sites or conduct county business. Services such as asphalt paving, concrete repairs, sealcoating, asphalt overlays, pavement markings and asphalt repairs are commonly requested by property owners in Danville.
What is that strange orange brick building? Why should I care about that? That striking orange, brick building is the Guardian Building of downtown Detroit. When deciding to go to a historical site in the city, I was drawn in by the history of the place. I am relatively new to the city and when I heard about this place, I knew that’s where I wanted to go. When our group traveled together to the site, it became apparent why this building is not only important to Detroit, but to all cities. The Guardian Building was not only a great fixture of the past, but it is a leading example of the efforts to bring a city back to greatness.
It must have been 13 years or so since I have been to the art museum, back in elementary school, on a one of a kind field trip. 13 years is way too long to have been away from the art museum, as my experience this year reminded me that. It was a beautiful, sunny October day, although it felt like July, and it was an even better day to talk a walk through the vast, mesmerizing pieces of art that the museum has to offer. The North Carolina Museum of Art provides an abundance of artwork from various time periods, cultures, and one can find art anywhere from Egyptian, to classical, to modern and contemporary art. The artwork that the museum provides not only displays an abundance of artwork, but
The National Public Housing Museum is much more than an objects and artifacts museum, rather it is a place of stories that explain the vast complex history of public and publicly subsidized housing in America.
The Governors Mansion is known for a lot and I would say famous for the majority of the same reasons, such as Serving as the residence for Georgia's chief executives for over thirty years, the Mansion's history encompasses the antebellum, Civil War, and early Reconstruction phases of the state's history. Also the Georgia's Old Governor’s Mansion also served as a stage on which many elements of the complex social issues of the antebellum period were played out. Slavery and the complexity of society and gender roles are among the issues that shape the history of the building and are explored in tandem with the issues of politics.
The Cathedral and Everyday use were both enlightening and intriguing stories. Written by two renowned authors and differs in numerous ways, set out to explain and disseminate its readers to dissimilar characters and themes. Whether fiction, non-fiction, there were meaningful lessons learned from reading both stories. The Cathedral is a story about two friends, a blind man Robert and his female friend who reunited after ten years, even though they communicated by sending tapes and poems. While Everyday use was a story about a woman who had two daughters, Maggie and Dee, with two different personalities. Maggie, who lives at home with her mom was shy and scar by burns she had sustained from a house fire, while her eldest sister
