Short Term 12 is a provocative movie because it talks about troubling circumstances that are generally not mentioned. In this 2013 movie, which is written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the aftermath of abusive situation are discussed.
Cretton created a film that expresses the ugly consequences of abuse, in a way that makes the audience able to relate. He developed a story that showed the many problems that teenagers deal with today such as abuse and depression. Cretton brought the issues to the audience in a captivating manner.

Jayden came to Short Term 12 depressed because she felt like she could not trust anyone and that nobody liked her and also because of the abuse she suffered from her father. She does not know how to deal with the hurt and resentment so she becomes depressed and closes herself up.
Dealing with all the issues the young people are going through the caretakers themselves become depressed.
One reason is because of the problems the young people are going through, it brings back memories of their own abusive childhoods.
Grace, a caretaker at Short Term 12, was abused by her father when she was a young child. When Jayden came to Short term 12 with a similar history, it brought Grace’s past memories back, causing her to become depressed. Time Out film critic Tom Huddleston claims, “…The film also marks the return of that all-to-familiar facet of stories about problem kids: extreme prodigiousness. In this shelter alone there’s a 17-year-old rapper with skills that’d turn Jay-Z green, and a 14-year-old girl who isn’t just an artistic genius but expresses her horrific home situation in the form of a neat little moral fairy tale…” This concept is untrue because it is quite probable for young people to find different and creative ways to express themselves and in doing so they excel in that area.
Another reason they become depressed

In this review, she gives a short summary of the film and gives very interesting arguments. Kempley states “ Like the eloquent, darkly funny dialogue, the film's characters, setting and cadences draw us into its world, with all its terrors and tenderness. What emerges is a masterpiece of Southern storytelling that draws a sharp line between good and evil. “. This statement gives a highly intriguing intake of the film and describes many factors that impressed her. The film has some humorous scenes, but also has a dark story about domestic violence and mental disabilities. The film also has a major theme of good and evil. Throughout the film, Karl talks about the bible and the right thing to do; however, he still commits murder by the end of the film. Some may argue that it was the right thing to do, and others argue that murder is never justified. This is a pure example of the fight between good and evil in the film. Kempley also states “ While well-mannered and cuddly in a predictable Southern Gothic way, the mildly retarded Karl is also, well, a homicidal maniac. But a lovable one. “ In this statement, Kempley misrepresents Karl. He isn’t a homicidal maniac, but rather someone with a disability who sometimes does the wrong thing with right

Later adulthood is the time in life when changes in marriage, families, and peer relationships are affected the most by the loss of someone close to that person. “Most people 70 years of age or older are widowed, divorced, or single” (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2010, p.619). Losing a spouse or close friend can create a sense of loneliness, which causes depression, anxiety and the emptiness feeling can become overwhelming. Depression also leads to psychological effects that will deteriorate a person’s health causing the chance for a terminal disease to become much higher. The weaker appearance of older adults causes family and remaining peers to step up in the role of making sure the person’s wellbeing is being met. (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2010). The political elements of the movie are shown through the politics of violence. The movie focuses on masculinity, violence and gender. It resembles the pathology of individual and institutional violence that fills America, ranging from hate crimes to criminal subcultures. Violence functions mostly through the politics of denial, insulation, disinterest and inability to criticize with self-consiousness. This is the violence that represents society today.
Short films vary from feature films as they are generally short in length and not highly commercialised, expressing how more does not always denote better. This presents film directors with the freedom to address controversial topics and to not have to keep the interest of the audience for extended periods of time. This is effective in the manner that the genre can allow for the widening of personal choices for the director, despite the time frame. Vincent by Tim Burton explores the use of experimentation and controversy with a theme regarding the horrors of the mind, with no love interest and no stereotypical happy ending. 11'09"01- September 11 (USA) by Sean Penn also presents such a theme, but rather looks at the contrast between an individual's
This film highlights the flaws of humanity in a western world. The films ability to touch on topics of classism, prostitution, and alcoholism makes the content mature and unlike typical western films. This revolutionary and innovative western created a foundation for many future films. The sophistication of the content, and lack of adherence to the production code makes this film an “adult”
The psychiatrist decides that it would be a good idea for the both of them to set out and find his mother. In the end he finds his mother and then he gets married to the girl he first dated.
Teen’s emotions are changing every day, and with this comes some major depression. This is because teens may feel like with their mood swings that their peers and people they look up to will not like them. Every teen will experience some sort of mood swing but how they deal with it is up to them. “When a teen starts getting depressed they should talk to either their friends, parents, or a consular to help them with their depression” (Smith). Teens show depression on social media and their peers take advantage of that and nobody even cares most of the time until the person takes their life.
