“Inventing the University”
In the paper “Inventing the University” by David Bartholomae, he shows the mistakes that basic writers make in college. It shows us what writers are lacking in writing effectively for an academic community. He compares and contrasts the differences between a mater writer and a basic writer. It shows how an expert writer keeps the audience in mind and a struggling writer does not. Bartholomae says that writers in college need to learn to “invent the university” which means they adapt their writing to writing and speak the ideas of an academic setting. Bartholomea saying that writers must connection with the reader before making new or controversial arguments. The writer need to make connection with the readers’ expectations. All writers need take on the position of being a part of the audience so they can get a both inside and established and powerful discourse, and you have been given the special right to write. He describes this essay as having all the means of ‘inventing the university’ with a “specialized language, and both a general and a text-book-like conclusion” (Bartholomae 210).
The problem is when professor ask their students to take on writing in this new way without any experience when the professor ask them to deny the situation in the classroom where students have little power and the teacher has the power. This is problems students struggle with writing come from. When students try to have this power that the professor gives them they often just end up imitating their professor rather than coming up with their own ideas. Students need to put themselves into the situation they are writing to for discovery to happen. Another problem with students writing is the they not being put into an academic setting and have to take exams that don’t have writing. Bartholomea blames this on the teachers and the syllabus for writing in the class room. These problems can be fix went we change the academic format and rewrite them.
