In the paper “Inventing the University” by David Bartholomae, he shows the mistakes that basic writers make in college. It shows us what writers are lacking in writing effectively for an academic community. He compares and contrasts the differences between a mater writer and a basic writer. It shows how an expert writer keeps the audience in mind and a struggling writer does not. Bartholomae says that writers in college need to learn to “invent the university” which means they adapt their writing to writing and speak the ideas of an academic setting. Bartholomea saying that writers must connection with the reader before making new or controversial arguments. The writer need to make connection with the readers’ expectations. All writers need take on the position of being a part of the audience so they can get a both inside and established and powerful discourse, and you have been given the special right to write. He describes this essay as having all the means of ‘inventing the university’ with a “specialized language, and both a general and a text-book-like conclusion” (Bartholomae 210).
The problem is when professor ask their students to take on writing in this new way without any experience when the professor ask them to deny the situation in the classroom where students have little power and the teacher has the power. This is problems students struggle with writing come from. When students try to have this power that the professor gives them they often just end up imitating their professor rather than coming up with their own ideas. Students need to put themselves into the situation they are writing to for discovery to happen. Another problem with students writing is the they not being put into an academic setting and have to take exams that don’t have writing. Bartholomea blames this on the teachers and the syllabus for writing in the class room. These problems can be fix went we change the academic format and rewrite them. In David Bartholomae’s article, he circles around the notion that students are not capable of writing like a teacher or a professor. It's his understanding that a College or High School student cannot write a paper to the standards of the teachers. If that student tries to “mimic” a teacher that said student will fail. “Inventing the University”, written by David Bartholomae, dives into his theory on what skills a successful student should possess. The main idea throughout the piece is that one should speak and write a certain way, and if they cannot, they should pretend to- meaning that, in an academic setting, if one wishes to become a scholar and converse with other scholars, they must imitate the discourse of the privileged until it becomes natural to them. The discourse- a way of speaking, writing, and thinking, or an identity kit- is only available to those who “must learn to speak [their] language. Or [who]...dare to speak it, or to carry off the bluff, since speaking and writing will most certainly be required long before the skill is learned.

Those would be my top priories. Before I knew it I had been accepted into a discourse community of members that were striving for the same ideals that I was-The Greek fraternity Lambda Chi Alpha. Through the proses of being an initiate, I learned life long core values of community between other members. Interviewing the president of Lambda Chi Alpha, Luke Crenshaw, I uncovered the rigorous involvement of academic writing skills and how that plays a giant roll in this discourse community. These benefits are included in the values and beliefs of a discourse community.
In “Inventing the University,” David Bartholomae discusses how students are having to conform to their university’s vernacular to sound more educated than they actually are (1). The role of academic writing in a student's life is largely contested among rhetoric and writing professors and academics. Covino and Joliffe's article "What is Rhetoric?" and Elbow and Bartholomae's academic discussion both seek to define both what role academic is and what role writing should play in undergraduate studies. While "What is Rhetoric?" focuses more on finding one definitive definition of rhetoric, Elbow and Bartholomae focus more on how they believe rhetoric and academic writing should be applied in the classroom. The different way of writing in this course is that Becky gives us chance to revise the paper. I wrote some paper in other courses. I found this is the only course that the teacher will remark the papers depend on the revised version. Another difference is no word limit for our papers. I remember before we wrote the first paper, some student asked Becky how many words the paper should at least have. When Becky said no limit, we all surprised. As I wrote in my second paper, schooling need freedom. No word limit makes me focus more on the matter rather than how long the paper should be. I really like the way Becky give students feedbacks for papers. It clearly shows the weakest part of my writing is organization. I cannot organized my paper very well. When I wrote the initial paper, I did not pay attention on organization. I just write what I thought and put them together. After I read the feedback from Becky, I can organized more clearly. I read my paper again and I realized there are some points not related to the main idea of my paper. I learned how to make the paper logical—write more details and explain them deeply. So that I can get stronger evidence to support my viewpoint. By modifying my papers, I know too much ideas will make readers confused.
