The importance of education is often recognized but can be difficult to deliver. The challenge of providing an effective parent/ caregiver education is an issue that Speech Language Pthologists may come in contact with.

As a daughter of a Special Education teacher, my interest in populations with special needs was sparked at a young age. Though I’ve always been interested in health professions, I was indecisive on which field best suited me. However, I when I discovered Speech Language Pathology (SLP), I found what I was looking for. I desire to be an SLP because it will give me the freedom to work in a variety of locations and environments with many different populations while enjoying the luxury of a flexible schedule, a nice income, and possible self-employment. I am eager to learn in graduate school and am excited about being a future SLP.

In elementary school I was in a program for speech therapy provided by a speech-language pathologist. I remember going to events and my anger getting out of control due to the frustration of not being able to speech properly. The trouble with my speech was mostly fluency, articulation, and voice. I had acid reflux which lead to voice issues, while fluency and articulation was a combination of genetics and being born premature leading to a slower development than most of my peers. Going back to school to take some courses in this area has also solidified my decision to finally pursue this path.
