The career, Speech Therapist, stood out to me because of the concept of helping someone overcome an issue that they may have had all of their life. By helping a person develop a common skill, you could be changing their life in a positive way. To actually hear the progress you have made through the person’s own mouth is something that would make you feel like you have a purpose and that is to help people make their lives better. When I graduated from high school I originally planned on being an Athletic Trainer. After being accepted into not only Shenandoah University but the pre-admit AT program which is a three plus two program, I was going to graduate with a masters degree in five years. In my sophomore year at Shenandoah I realized that I did not want to be an Athletic Trainer. I began looking into what careers were out there that I could pursue with an Exercise Science degree. Simultaneously, this experience was substantially fun and educating. It was a summer camp for children that included Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Speech. During this summer camp, I witnessed children improve their fine motor and gross motor skills that are essential to their daily lifestyle. Both of these skills were addressed in creative ways such as interacting with different textures, writing, playing with play dough, and even allowing the children to get undressed and dressed for water play.

If there is a child who is learning English as their second language and has two months not being able to speak a single word in English, I would not refer him to speech therapy. Unless, if he definitely cannot pronounce words either in his home language or second language then yes, I would refer him to speech. The reason for this is because the child may need time to have the courage to speak or may just not understand most language. He does understand some speech and responses non-verbally and this is a great start for him. It is important that teachers do not attempt to replace the child’s first language with English. “The teachers should never attempt to replace the child’s home language with the second language.” (Bullard, J. (2017). pg. 234). We have to respect their language and just scaffold the vocabulary that you want to teach the children. Using a lot of pictures, gestures or manipulatives with the vocabulary will help the child learn and capture the word meaning. “It is important to use gestures, manipulatives and visual aids to assist” (Bullard, J. (2017). pg. 235).

For my career speech I chose to research physical therapy. Before this I was interested in becoming a physical therapist so I had already done some of the research. I knew a little about the career but learning more was cool and interesting.I learned a lot about what it is like to be a physical therapist and their job requirements. Overall it was really interesting learning more about physical therapists.
