Gospel music has always been a good outlet for me. It has also spoken to me and gave me answers nothing nor anyone else could. It helps me connect to my roots and remember who to turn to in a desperate time of need. The most important songs have helped through the darkest times in life. One song that stands out to me and lifts me up is Greater is Coming by Jekalyn Carr. This is a song that supports me while going through obstacles, staying optimistic, and overcoming obstacles. In the beginning of the song it talks about the 3 stages of an olive. The olive has to go through the shaking, the beating, and the pressing in order for the oil to run. I’ve always been one to never give up on anything easily. When Carr sings, “If it had not been for
The poem “The White Porch” by Cathy Song is an illustration of maturity and coming of age. There is an innocent tone to the beginning of the poem with sensual undertones as the writing progress’s. In the poem, a woman is reminiscing about her young womanhood as she sits on her porch awaiting her presumed lover. Song creates the character of the woman to be of a homemaker, describing her duties taking care of laundry, having a cake in the oven and snapping beans in her lap. Through the visualization that Song creates it is assumed that the woman is pregnant, and as she is waiting for her husband she thinks back to the things she herself used to do when she was younger with her own mother. She is reflecting on the way her mother raised her thinking about how she wants to raise her own child. The speaker admits to sneaking in her lover late at night behind her mother’s back, but does not seem to feel remorseful because all her decisions led to where she is in her life now. Cathy Songs poem “The White Porch” portrays the transition of a girl into a woman using symbolism, imagery and simile.
On average, 1 person commits suicide every 16.2 minutes(Do Something). The song 1-800 by Logic sets a scene of a boy who goes through life and struggles with being gay, bullied, and suicidal thoughts. Which leads to a call to the 1-800 suicide hotline. The video takes a turn and ends happily with the main actor being married and surrounded by family and friends. The main point that this song displays is that suicide is a real problem and it portrays that through stressing the importance of accepting everyone. My main points in this paper are the content of the video, the sound and pace, how this piece affects today’s society, what modes of persuasion are used.
While I was volunteering at a local emergency shelter with a friend, a team of gospel singers visited the shelter, hoping to enliven spirits through song. Being worship leaders at our own church, my friend and I anxiously, yet excitedly, joined them. Before singing, we all agreed on a list of simple, but powerful, Christian songs that everyone would be able to sing along to. The melodies, piercing the atmosphere, soon had shattered families standing hand in hand, joining our growing chorus of hope for a speedy recovery in Houston.
J. Cole released his album 2014 Forest Hill Drive on December 9, 2014 without any features, media marketing, or promotions (Berry). This album became significant within the music industry because of how far it strays from the lyrical composition of popular rap artists of today. Majority of rap artists in the 2000’s rely heavily on commercial producers and multiple artist features to promote the popularity of their album. Rappers often do not stray far from crude, sexual and misogynistic lyrics just to gain fame and cash flow for their label. As a hip-hop artist, J. Cole manages to gain more success than any rap album with no features. J. Cole writes an honest, and nostalgic album that speaks further into his thoughts on current social issues and his personal life story. He shines a light on his insecurities and gets his audience to feel a special connection with him as an artist. J. Cole managed to create the only album in rap and hip-hop history to go platinum without any features while transcending development of pop culture within the rap industry.
My story has a meaningful story behind it. The story is deep for me and even for the artist and probably for many other people. Hearing songs like this can inspire you. It inspired me to be thankful for the people in my life. One day they can be here the next they could be gone. You never know what’s going on in their lives.
There are different kinds of popular music, rock, pop, soul, country, reggae, rap, and dance music. Those are the kind of music that I only recognized before, until my brother introduce me to Christian Music. When I started listening to it, I felt enthralled. Until then, it became part of my life. It fills my car, makes me cry, and sometimes gives me chills the I cannot even explain why.?! One of the song that I really adore is “The Words I Would Say” by Sidewalk Prophets.
Gospel music allows many to express religious beliefs through music and to express it. Gospel music can date back to slave times and used this music along with spirtuicals to send messages to others to help when excaping from slave owners. Along with gospel being influenced by spirituals you can also see connections from different sounds and tempos in blues music and
As the title of the paper suggests, I chose Kendrick Lamar’s song “Blacker the Berry” off the To Pimp A Butterfly album. When selecting a song, I actually took to Twitter to ask my followers what song I should write about. I personally do not listen to Kendrick Lamar so I decided to ask people who enjoy his music to recommend songs that an analysis should be written over. Several people mentioned “Blacker The Berry”. Although I did not hear the many rhymes and metaphors at first, after reading the lyrics along with listening to the song I was quick to realize how creative, witty and almost unintentional the rapping’s of Kendrick Lamar are. Another reason I decided on this song is because he raps about current violence of high profile crimes
Ludacris does a remarkable job of portraying his message about the struggles that some adolescents are faced with. “Runaway Love”, by Ludacris, featuring Mary J. Blige (2007), represents the theme of struggle through hip-hop and rap music. It is about little girls who are “stuck up in the world on their own.” They have to take care of themselves because the people they are around do not care about them. They range from nine to eleven years in age, and their goal in life, at such a young age, is to run away from home. Ludacris is trying to get the listener to realize the struggles that even children have to face because adults are not the only ones who have problems, like most people believe. He is very successful in
Many songs that we listened to sounded like they came right out of Brave New World. The ones I liked most would have to be “Can't Feel My Face”, “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” and “I Am Produced”.
The power of song helped slaves through their dehumanized lives. They created unity in songs of religion and denounced the power their masters held over them. They were going to rebel in all facets of life. Slaves knew “that a happy slave is an extinct man” (p.33). The meanings of these songs can not be overstated. One who knew the importance of song was Frederick Douglass. “They told a tale of woe...they breathed the prayer and complaint of souls boiling over with the
‘No matter gay, straight, or bi, I was born to survive’. In the words of lady GaGa herself it doesn’t matter who you marry, what your gender is or what’s you race you just need to accept others and yourself. Lady GaGa’s song ‘Born this Way’ informs others about self-acceptance in her new album ‘Born this way’. This song is about people abusing others and reflecting badly on them self because of their race, gender and choice in who they marry. Lady GaGa expresses her thoughts about people’s issues to say it doesn’t matter who you are because you were born that way.
In the film "Lean on Me", Joe Clark, a fictional version of the real Mr. Clark who was the principal at an inner-city high school in Paterson, New Jersey, is the ultimate example of an authoritarian leader. In the movie, Clark approaches his job at a decaying academic setting with single-minded goals: to clean up the school, physically and academically, in order to help the students who have potential to graduate and to get rid of the ones who are destined to fail, according to his perceptions. Clark 's leadership style has been both widely praised as successful and a model for similar such schools, and has also been criticized for its bullying tactics. This paper will discuss Clark 's methods of leadership, his style and tactics as
Music is worldwide and there is so many genres out today that no matter what type of music you listen to, there's something for everyone. Music can touch others that hands and words cannot. Sometimes when you are going through hard times it may be difficult to figure out how to say it. Just the simple act of listening to music can make you feel something you can't express. Someone once said "when words fail, music speaks" and that couldn't be truer. Music takes over when there's nothing else left to say. Knowing that alone, should be comforting to fall back on. I would listen to so many different types of music that there was no certain type that 'saved' me. It was just all of it combined. I never connected with people the way I connected with music. It seems to understand me more than anyone I've told anything to. That what made me
The song "The message" by Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five depicts the struggle of young black adults growing up in society. The struggle to make it out of poverty can be compared to survival of the fittest in a jungle. Only the strong would survive and adapt to the changes to fit in. Trying their best to make a betterment with whatever little society offers. Being a young black African American in the early 1980's was not easy. It was easier to live the fast life and gain fast money by being part of the drug community. Drugs, guns, and money was glamorized and this is what the young adults looked at as a means of getting rich. In the songs, a young man talks about how he is trying hard to hold on to the little bit of sanity he has left in his soul. He talks about the struggle he endures while trying not to get pushed over the edge. He was born an innocent child who's blind to the ways of mind kind. Growing up he faced many challenges and had to fight
