Ever since I decided that I wanted to become a nurse, I have hoped to obtain my degree from the School of Nursing at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor.    For me, the way the U of M nursing program exposes its students to a combination of  typical classroom setting and actual hands on learning is something that is exceptionally appealing. Also, the Ann Arbor campus is a highly accredited school known for its exceptional medical studies, programs, and overall campus life.

I am applying for the position of Nurse Extern at your facility and I meet the requirements set by your facility. I am in the process of earning my nursing degree and I will be graduating in December 2016. This position will help me gain the experience needed to take a step into the professional nursing world. This hands-on experience will be essential in helping me prepare myself to work as a nurse in the future.

Throughout my three years at Barnegat High School I have strived to be a respectful, responsible and influential student and athlete. I have worked hard to stand out among my peers, be dedicated to everything I do, work towards achieving my personal goals and positively influence those around me. As an individual and a young adult, I believe it is the responsibility of younger generations to work towards being the best version of ourselves we can possibly be and positively contribute to others and our community. Overall, I aspire to be a well rounded individual and character that demonstrates the qualities of respect, citizenship, and responsibility.

Personally, I feel like possessing a passion for this role means possessing a passion for leadership, for being a voice, for making a difference, for representing others and for creating a better community in which everyone has a say and in which everyone is comfortable. Those are things I’m passionate about. I want to have the ability to make a change and to make others feel like their opinions and ideas really do matter. I enjoy representing people and I want people to know that they can come and talk to me, that I can get their suggestions across to others. Also, SRC executive is one of the leadership positions for my year level and being a leader is one of the few things that I have a natural talent for. Today I will be addressing three main topics for my NHS application. The three main topics consist of my main qualities/ beliefs, leadership, and service. I first want to thank the organization for this amazing opportunity. Throughout this essay I will highlight these three aspects character, leadership, and service in my life.

The opportunities that NHS provides and would provide me if I was to be accepted are vast. NHS would provide me an extra element I would be able to add to my transcript to help me get into a university that I would like to join. I believe that if I were to join NHS it would greatly help me get into that college and that program. NHS would not only help me get into college but it would also recognize the effort I put into my school work and my sports. I received my master of science from Columbia University School of Nursing. Prior to becoming a Nurse Practitioner, I worked as a Spanish teacher for 15 years and as a Spanish medical interpreter for 7 years. Using my linguistic and cultural literacy, and the nursing skills I acquired at Columbia and as a working RN, I would be an asset as an NP, especially in a community like Washington Heights.

My initial interest in nursing began from my experience with my grandmother. It was in the fall of 2007 when my grandmother was sent to the hospital due to hypernatremia. My dad would pick me up every afternoon from school to visit my grandmother. I was given the responsibility to look after my grandma for nearly two weeks that includes in feeding her, assisting her, and other light duties. What fascinate me during my visits in the hospital were the nurses who assisted and took care of my grandma. They treated my grandma with dignity, kindness, compassion, courtesy, respect, understanding, and love. Their commitment, professionalism, dedication, determination and skills inspired me to pursue a career in the medical field. From that point, I realized that nursing is a field that enables people impact other people’s lives and make a difference. At 9 years old, being a nurse was a childhood dream and now I am at the point of turning my dream into reality. I want to study and pursue my dream registered nursing at Ryerson University that offers a nursing degree program that focuses on developing student’s critical thinking skills, ability to analyze reflectively and apply theory through community health focused practice making Ryerson one of the best nursing schools in Canada.

Thank you for considering my appeal to continue in the Nursing program. As much as I feel I should have been able to recover from missing 10 days of studying during my Term B classes, Therapeutic Use of Self and Adult 1; however, this was something I was not able to do despite my best efforts.

In addition to working full time and attending school as a full time student, I shadowed a Dosimetrist and a Radiation Therapist at Gamma West Cancer Services for approximately 30 hours over a one month period.
