Rachel Dodson ALBA BIO 50- TUE 5 September 2017 Academic Integrity Practice Assignment Part I Researchers at Heinrich Heine University sought out characteristics of LUCA, which stands for the last universal common ancestor. They found, through gene family analysis, that LUCA was a microbe that lived when the Earth had little to no oxygen. In fact, its metabolism implies that it was an organism that thrived in higher than normal temperatures and consumed hydrogen gas. From this information, scientists predicted that an environment near hydrothermal vents would have allowed LUCA to become successful, as it provides the sources of hydrogen gas and heat. These findings were published in July of 2016 in Nature Microbiology (Service, 2016). Part II A. To verify that an assignment is successfully submitted on Turnitin.com, a student must check for a digital receipt, which is automatically emailed to the student (Academic Integrity Assignment, 2017). C. It is never acceptable to reuse work from other courses for assignments in BIOSC 0050, as this is deemed self-plagiarism and will result in zero credit on an assignment (Academic Integrity Assignment, 2017). D. The bottom of page four of the syllabus provides information regarding assignment work. This page states that all assignments are expected to be completed individually unless clearly indicated by an assignment. Therefore, one would know if group work is acceptable if it is specified on the assignment (Foundations of Biology Lab 1: BIOSC 0050 Part I, 2017). E. Page five of the syllabus outlines the academic integrity policy. If a student violates the policy, he/she will go through a process to examine the infraction. The student will receive a zero for the plagiarized assignment and could potentially fail the course or be dismissed from the University of Pittsburgh (Foundations of Biology Lab 1: BIOSC 0050 Part I,

On a research paper, how much information can you “borrow” with or without citing the original author? How do you cite the resources you “borrowed” or quoted from the original author? Will anyone know if you submit a friend’s research paper? No one can see you taking an online test from your living room – should that change how you take a test?
I understand that the School does not tolerate plagiarism. Plagiarism is the knowing or reckless presentation of another person’s thoughts, writings, inventions, as one’s own. It includes the incorporation of another person’s work from published or unpublished sources, without indicating that the material is derived from those sources. It includes the use of material obtained from the internet. (Senate Regulations 6.46)I confirm that I adhere to the School’s Policy on plagiarism.
There are several facets of demonstrating aspects of academic integrity within the classroom. Students have a responsibility to be prepared for lecture material and to contribute to discussions that help to foster and continually improve an environment for learning. Additionally, students must emulate integrity by faithfully completing their own assignments. Any particular form of plagiarizing, or having another individual complete one's assignments, drastically violates the very purpose of any institute of higher learning (Bowden 82), which is to provide a comparative atmosphere of the knowledge and experience of the students engaged in a particular class with one another. Failing to adhere to basic standards of integrity by utilizing another's work as one's own greatly reduces

Prior to completing the Academic Integrity Program, I thought academic integrity was as simple “not cheating.” I considered it a policy solely implemented to ensure that students learned the material. To me, cheating was mostly plagiarism, or trying to pass off someone else’s work as your own. It was not until I completed the program that I began to understand the long-term effects of cheating on the peers, the professor, and the institution. Now, I understand that cheating affects not just me, but also the other students in my courses and the university’s reputation. I also understand the reasoning behind the university’s strict policies regarding academic integrity violations, as they are in place to protect the student, the classmates,
The University’s policy on cheating collusion and plagiarism will be applied to this piece of work.
After reading the case study and UoPeople’s academic integrity and code of conduct statement in Chapter 11, I noted that REGGIE and ARNIE copied someone’s work turn to be their paperwork of assignment. Based on UoPeople’s code of academic integrity, chapter 11 defined that “Plagiarism is the unintentional or intentional representation of the words or idea of another as one’s own work in any academic exercise. This includes failing to properly identify direct quotation with both a proper citation…..” (UoPeople Catalog, 2015-2016, p.90). Then this was known by their teacher and issued F to final grade to both of them for the course.
Instances of plagiarism or any other cheating will be reported to the Academic Board, and will at the very least result in failure of this course.
