In 2008 there were 1.21 million abortions performed in the United States. That is three thousand three hundred and twenty-two abortions performed each day (Guttmacher Institute). The topic of abortion has been a heavily talked about topic for the past few years. There are two sides of the issue, pro-life, which is against abortion and pro-choice, which is for abortion. Abortion should not be legal because it is a scientific procedure, it is currently supported by law, and deprives fetuses of a future like ours.

How would you feel if someone took away your ability to live? Imagine not having any say in whether or not you want to have a life. Well babies don't have a choice in their mother’s womb. If a woman decides to abort her baby, they can't do anything about their life being taken away from them. Their whole future is demolished. I believe abortion is wrong when committing it for a selfish reason.

From a historical perspective, child maltreatment has varied in form depending the time and place and the standing of which children hold within family and society. Child maltreatment as defined by the, includes physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, in addition to neglect (National Institution, 2011). Early childhood experiences create the basis for expression of intelligence, emotions, and personality (National Institution, 2011). When these experiences are predominantly negative, the stage is set for emotional, developmental, and behavioral problems that persist throughout life. Studies have shown that the brains of children who have experienced long-lasting abuse and neglect remain in a state of "hyper-arousal" or anticipation of forthcoming danger. This hyper-arousal may affect learning and the ability to form emotional bonds with others (National Institution, 2011). In the book Children and criminality, Flowers give a historical background of child maltreatment leading to his findings of how the treatment of children was and is based on seven distinct premises; (1) the value of children in a given time and place (2) how they fit into the structure of society; (3) religious beliefs and superstitions; (4) exploitation; (5) societal ideology; (6) economic stresses; and (7) psychological and societal induced stresses (Flowers, 1986).

Jaden is a fifteen year old girl in high school, one night she went to a party with her boyfriend with no parent supervision so there was a lot of underage drinking, she doesn’t remember a lot from the party that night because she was under the influence, but she does remember being upstairs with her boyfriend. A few days later her boyfriend had told her that she needed to take a pregnancy test because he didn’t use protection, later that day she found out that she was pregnant. Jaden is scared to tell her parents that she is pregnant but she knows she has to tell them so they can help her get an abortion. Teens should be able to get an abortion without parental consent because taking care of a child while in high school can be challenging, it can be hard to provide for a child as a teen, and although it means you have to kill your own child, having an abortion is cheaper than taking care of a baby.

Abortions should be illegal because it is immoral and unconstitutional, causes severe mental and physical issues, and negatively impacts the economy. “During the ancient Roman times it has been supposed that abortion and the destruction of unwanted children was permissible, but as our civilization has aged, it seems that such acts were no longer acceptable by rational human beings, so that in 1948, Canada along with most other nations in the world signed a declaration of the United Nations promising every human being the right to life”

In the reading “In Defense of Abortion and Infanticide,” Michael Tooley argued why he thinks abortion as well as infanticide is ok. His main argument was that, “An entity cannot have a right to life unless it is capable of having an interest in its own continued existence.” He appealed to Joel Fienburg’s interest principle. Tooley says that a zygote cannot be spoken of as a subject of interest or have desires, therefore a zygote cannot have a right to life.

The form I have chosen to use in order to depict my satirical piece about teenage pregnancy is that of a Teen Vogue magazine. I chose this form due to the fact that it is a well-known magazine for teenagers. I also chose this due to the fact that Teen Vogue and many other women’s magazines comprise of stereotypical, unrealistic, naïve and irrational content aimed towards female that can be, in a sense, highly demeaning.

A common debate in the world today involves abortion, the deliberate end of human pregnancy, and whether or not it should be legalized. “Every year in the world there are an estimated 40-50 million abortions. This corresponds to approximately 125,000 abortions per day” (“Abortions Worldwide this Year”). On one side of the argument, people are not disturbed by this grotesque number, and on the other side there are people outraged and simply appalled. Although people attempt to deem abortion acceptable in society because of circumstances like the mother not being able to support the child or in instances of rape, it is still morally wrong.

The legal rights and availability of women to have access to abortions was decided by the landmark case of Roe v Wade (1) (1973). In terms of how this ruling impacted our freedoms, while it gave the birthmother a right to choose life or death for her baby; the baby 's freedom, that of the right to life, (as stated in our Declaration of Independence (2)) is totally stripped away. Therefore, the ruling of the case Roe v Wade (1) was effective for what it set out to do, which was to give the birthmother the right to choose what to do with "her body." However, it set up the issue of having to determine the viability of the unborn baby, and when life actually begins. Both issues are still being redefined today.

Today, 76 percent of the world's people live in countries where induced abortion is legal, at least for health reasons, and 39 percent reside in nations where abortion is available upon request. The procedure is legal in nearly every developed country, and although a majority of developing countries prohibit abortion, 67 percent of the residents of the developing world live in countries where it is permitted at least for health reasons. It is regrettable that female infanticide and foeticide are rapidly decreasing the female population throughout India. The main factors that is responsible for the increase in the incidence of female infanticide and foeticide is the low status of women, son preference, and the practice of dowry across all casts groups.
