Tim Winton has shown, the concept of Journeys are complex, involving a process of failure, learning and development, to be true through his stories, Big World and Neighbours. This concept is shown to be true by John Lee Hancock, through his film, The Blind Side. The journey may offer life-changing experiences, but it is ultimately the destination that motivates the traveller to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals, making both equally important. Journeys can be driven by aims of escaping to a better place, but the process itself is just as significant as it shapes the outlook of the traveller. Development occurs throughout and after one’s journey. The Blind side portrays a homeless, un- intelligent African American male, and his growth as a person and as a football player due to Leanne taking him in and giving him a life he could only dream of as a child. This journey is initially centred on developing and learning but extends into the discovery of his identity and place in life. Neighbours allow readers to understand the challenges and ordeals faced by a couple and how it places the reader in a position to observe varying values and attitudes. Their journey is centred on learning, multiculturalism and belonging, as they realise that their neighbours aren’t bad but kind people, who want to help them out. Tim Winton uses descriptive language to describe the reactions of their neighbours. As ‘the man in the deli gave her small presents of chocolates and him packets of cigarettes that he stored at home……Italian woman began to offer name…..’ the detail list of the presents is shown the helping of their neighbours and they have accepted by the community and also the couple accepted them as they take the
