We are faced with two considerations when discussing the dilemma of a father stealing a loaf of bread to feed his hungry family. The first consideration is whether this act is ethically wrong and the other consideration here is the way the society views stealing within the context of law. Morality is concerned with the relationship that exists between people and how, ultimately they can best live in peace and harmony. The goal of morality is to protect a high quality of life for an individual or for the community as a whole. (Purtilo & Doherty, 2011). Both ethics and law are not compatible most of the time. While the act of stealing is considered illegal with the context of law but ethically, he was trying to feed his hungry family.

All across the world, in many different locations, traditions, ways, and views, ethics are being expressed and supported as well as being tested. In a specific circumstance covered in the reading, “Loot or Find: Fact or Frame?” written by Cheryl I. Harris and Devon W. Carbado, ethics were tested, and serious matters such as framing and color blindness were discussed and elaborated on.
Philosophical thought provides the infrastructure that allows society to author moral laws. While morality may be the aim, other variables can cause these laws to become corrupt. The urge for power is one of many, recurring, variables that infect morality. During these times of ‘infection,’ society must contest those who oppose just laws. In order to shine a light on unjust laws, laws are bound to be broken. It is not only lawful to break unjust laws, but the duty of the people to speak up and be a voice for change. It is critical, during these times, to work towards equilibrium with the goal to change the law. Regardless of the circumstances, it is lawful to break unjust laws with the goal to make them just again.
The society generally has established customs and moral imperative to guide the conduct of each member of that particular society. These norms designating certain ways in which people ought to live in the society exist in societal laws and moral prescription. The justifications for the ideal practices in the society have been found in the desire to maintain peaceful coexistence in the society. The extent of freedom of an individual is therefore often curtailed for the greater good of the society. These utilitarian considerations have been discussed amidst the concept and rationale of punishment. John Stuart Mill, Michel Foucault and Kantian ethics have been used to justify or refute the notion and rationale of punishment in our society. These ethical perspectives provide useful insight into understanding punishment and its justifications or otherwise. Punishment is necessary as a social control tool and must be exerted with reasonableness and with due regard for the aim for which it is exerted.
Ethical studies in criminal justice is important because it provides the professionals with a platform for making noble choices when faced with unsure situations of moral concern. In this case, they require a system of rules as a guide in making complex moral decisions. Consequently, criminal justice professionals will develop analytical skills and reasoning potential in discerning the practical and theoretical aspects of their profession’s system. Choices define what being a human is. How a person reacts to decision making, reflects the character and personality that a person possesses. Deciding the appropriate action for a tremendously difficult situation always results in one party disagreeing with the route taken. In the short story “Bread” a young girl with very limited life experience is forced to make a decision that could impact the life of her young sister. The article “A Framework for Thinking Ethically” depicts several strategies for making ethical decisions that could be applied to this situation. The virtue approach alongside the utilitarian approach could be applied to this specific situation.
Larceny is defined as the wrongful taking and carrying away of the personal goods of another from his or her possession with intent to convert them to the takers own use. To bluntly say it, larceny is stealing from others. No matter what the motives or reasons behind stealing are, it is still wrong. One culture may value theft, as in some of the American Indian tribes of the plains, particularly against enemies. Such action showed bravery and skill in battle. Another culture might abhor the idea that one person should be allowed to steal from another, and the value here is the sanctity of private property, as in the Western industrial countries. When differences occur, the question arises as to what moral idea produces the right action. Somewhere in the history of human cultural interaction, these two values will collide. They can not both be right. What is the truly moral idea? Hence there is a need for an objective criterion, again one that transcends either culture, rather than simply be a preference of one culture over another.
