In the play, A Christmas Carol: Scrooge and Marley by Israel Horovitz the main character Scrooge is a cold-hearted miser who despises Christmas and people. At the beginning, he shows very different and mean actions towards people and how he is always mad. For example when Scrooge leaves his office's people start to walk past him in a happy and merry mood. But in contrast to the people, Scrooge has a frown and looks unhappy for the Christmas time. Another example is that when his nephew is talking to him he is wanting him to leave so he keeps on repeating the words, “Good Afternoon!” until he leaves. The last example would be that when Cratchit is cold in the office, Scrooge starts yelling at him saying that he would fire him because he was showing he was cold. Scrooge also shows it in his own words by saying “...every idiot who goes about with “Merry Christmas” on his lips, should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart.”(647). The ghost of christmas past showed Scrooge multiple scenes showing how he treated people in the past and how he was wrong. One scene is where Past takes him back to his hometown where he sees everyone being happy and jolly and hearing the beautiful sing of christmas carolers. Past shows him that christmas isn't that bad and it never did anything to him. Past takes him back to when scrooge and his sister were back in school and how lonely they were but they still had each other. Scrooge rememberers how
As soon as Jacob left, Scrooge went to bed but to only be awaken by the ghost of Christmas Past. The ghost was a strange childlike phantom with a brightly glowing head. The boy took Scrooge out through the window and travel back in time to revisits his childhood school days, his apprenticeship with a jolly merchant named Fezziwig, and his engagement to Belle, a woman who leaves Scrooge because his lust for money eclipses his ability to love another. Each past recollection that he hold caused scrooge to rethink where did he go wrong and caused him to tear up and sob and even regret not giving to someone who today ask for money for the poor. The ghost then returned Scrooge to his bedroom after his time travel through his past.
From the reading, I know that Scrooge is a dolorous and crabby man who is identified as all head no heart. A tight-fisted hand at the grindstone kind of man is he accounting for every sterling. I know he hates Christmas by the response he gave to his nephew when he came to ask Scrooge to join his family for dinner. Fred, his nephew, says to Scrooge, “Christmas a humbug, you don’t mean that , I am sure.” Scrooge replies, “I do.” “Merry Christmas! What right do you have to be merry?” Fred ignores Scrooge’s negative response and continues to spread his joy by asking his uncle to join his family for dinner. On page six when carolers visited at his door, “Scrooge seized the ruler with such energy of action, that the singer fled in terror, leaving the keyhole to the fog and even more congenial frost.” The foggy frozen mist outside his office crept through the door to freeze his old features as it did his heart. That one of a kind man is very greedy and selfish. The text claims he is a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner! Scrooge’s business partner Marley is “dead as a doornail!” Marley’s ghost appears within Scrooge’s door knocker one day. Scrooge is slightly freaked out by the fact that Marley’s ghost is at his house! He then asks the ghost who he is. The ghost immediately responds telling him to ask who he was. Marley’s ghost continuously asks Scrooge if he believes in him. Scrooge responds as if he does, but does not.
Which take him to The ghost of Christmas Past, The ghost of Christmas Present, and The ghost of Christmas Future. The ghost of Christmas Past takes Scrooge to his past. He takes him to his hometown. Scrooge is with the Ghost of Christmas past and sees these people pass by while singing.
Based on what I read, Scrooge is a tight fisted-hand at the grindstone. As a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching covetous old sinner, his reputation in the community is perceived as a ill-mannered man. According to the text, Scrooge is hard and sharp as flint, from which no steel has ever struck out generous fire; secret, and self-contained, and solitary as an oyster. In the text it states that, “Scrooge’s appearance is topped with his frosty rime on his head and his eyebrows makes him appear shrewd and cold.” Scrooge pronounce “What’s Christmas time to you but paying bills without money; a time for finding yourself a year older, but not an hour richer; a time for balancing your books and having everything.
In the beginning, Scrooge is a bitter and greedy man who hates christmas. When his nephew talks about Christmas Scrooge says “Bah!...Humbug!” (48). When his Nephew asks if he means it, he says he does. When asked to donate money, Scrooge said “Nothing!...I wish to be left alone,” (51).
THe old times for her are truly missed. Anyways, in the story (A Christmas Carol) Scrooge transforms into a better person. The Ghost of Christmas Past visits Scrooge. The Ghost of Christmas Past shows Scrooge the Christmas party he was at many years ago, Scrooge sees his young self dancing with a beautiful girl.
“Bah Humbug!” said the mean, ungrateful Scrooge, as he would say to any living person on this planet. Scrooge is a mean and miserable person. The story A Christmas Carol takes place in London in the 1800’s during the time of the Industrial Revolution. This story is focused around the main character named Scrooge. Scrooge is a very nasty and ungrateful man who doesn’t believe in the Christmas Spirit. His partner in business Marley died 3 years ago but his name still lies on the sign outside their counting-house. He has no family and refuses to be grateful for what he has. Scrooge is a mean and miserable person because he would rather have the poor die than donate some money, he would never let Cratchit be warm during the winter, he chose money
It starts out with Jacob Marley’s ghost telling the audience about Scrooge. After Marley vanishes, it shows Scrooge at work. When Scrooge’s nephew came by to wish him and Bob Cratchit a merry Christmas, Scrooge then calls Christmas a Bah Humbug! (Dickens 3) At his house, Scrooge gets haunted by Jacob Marley, telling him to shape up. He then, like the movie, that he will be haunted by three more ghosts, for his welfare. The first ghost , unlike the movie, visits four places with Scrooge. After the Spirit is finished with Scrooge, he takes Scrooge back to his home. After he has slept for a while, Marley comes gives Scrooge a lecture. After Marley, the Spirit of Christmas Present takes Marley’s place. With Present, they visit three places, similar to the movie. When Present is finished with Scrooge, the very last spirit comes, the one Scrooge was most dreading, the spirit of Christmas future. In the same way as the movie, the spirit of Christmas future shows Scrooge horrifying possibilities for the future. After that terrifying experience for Scrooge, he wakes up on Christmas day, and then changes his ways immediately. He sees a young boy and tells to go get the butcher with the prize turkey. He gives the boy some money, and then tells the butcher to give the turkey to Bob Cratchit, and he wanted to be an anonymous giver. (Dickens 33) Scrooge was a changed man for the better in the
The ghost was from the past. It showed him all the bad things that happened in the past all the things. All of his old days came back when the ghost of Christmas past showed him. He showed Scrooge when his sister died and that was the sad part. Then the ghost finally took scrooge back to his house and he lied down and it brought back good and bad memories. That was how the ghost of Christmas past influence
In the beginning of the story, “A Christmas Carol”, Scrooge is grouchy, selfish, and mean to everyone. All he cares about is money (material good) in the beginning of the story. He isn’t a overjoyed person with this material good. He tells his son he rather be dead than be with his family, he says mean things to the 2 men going around collecting money, and sometimes he is even mean to Cratchit. Also notice, this is when he doesn’t have any family around him. After going through memories/experiences, he sees the type of person he was, is, and going to become. Scrooge changes his ways because of the memories/experiences he was shown by the spirits. In the end, Scrooge doesn’t cherish material goods any more, he cherishes experiences. Scrooge goes around giving money away in good deeds like it means nothing to him anymore, he gives money to the portly man, and a raise to Cratchit. He does this just out of the kindness of his heart. He is only interested now in being a positive, kind person, not the person he used to be. Notice, he is a very happy man at this point in the story. This is when he is developing friends and having family closer to him than ever. For me, I feel Dickens is trying to tell us how an experience can change a
The ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future all had a message for Scrooge, but they all went about telling him in their own ways. The ghost of Christmas Present was more demanding and cheerful, he wanted peace on earth and goodwill to men. Whereas, the ghost of Christmas Future looked like the Grim Reaper” and he showed Scrooge what would become of him if he didn’t change (dead). But, the ghost of Christmas Past was kind of adorable, he was a flame and he was very gentle with Scrooge and very understanding. In fact, the more I think about it the more I understand. As I continued watching the videos I realized the the ghosts all treated Scrooge the way they did because of his past, present, and future. Scrooge didn’t have a very good childhood, so that
In the movie a Christmas carol scrooge is visited by 3 ghost that showed his past, present and future.scrooge hated Christmas because be cause his partner Jacob Marley died on that very day seven years ago scrooge is also very heartless to the people who want to help him his nephew even invited him to dine with them for Christmas he said no his nephew loved Christmas but scrooge did not .
During the story while the spirits are visiting Scrooge he starts to feel guilty. They make him feel guilty by showing him his past memories. The spirit of Christmas past showed Scrooge the memories of when he lost the love of his life because he was being too greedy and too focused on his business. The spirit of Christmas Present showed him what is currently happening at the Cratchit house. Scrooge sees the Cratchits eating supper, and the spirit tells Scrooge that he needs to help Tiny Tim because he is dying. The spirit of Christmas Future showed Scrooge what is going to happen to him. Scrooge is shown a funeral for Tiny Tim with lots
Scrooge is excessively angry, rude, unfriendly character. Scrooge’s cruel actions to most others are unkind, especially when it’s about Christmas. The bitterness drive in Scrooge against Christmas is very strong. Scrooge also hates things such as love, happiness, generosity, and regards them as irrational until such time that a rightful trio of ghosts came to set him right. Charles Dickens paints him as an old businessman, with a ring of frosty white hair on his head, a pointed nose, red eyes, thin eyebrows, and a wiry chin. Scrooge is so acutely cold inside, it makes his lips blue, the tip of his nose strawberry red. The book describes him as hard and sharp as flint, self-contained, and solitary like an oyster. Scrooge is described as a
A Christmas Carol written by Charles Dickens is a novel that is intended to teach its reader the importance of treating each other other the way one would wish to treat you. There are many examples throughout the whole book that scrooge doesn’t treat people the way he wants to be treated. For instance, scrooge also had always hated christmas and the people who celebrated christmas. For example in the text he was talking to his nephew. “Then I live in such a world of fools as this Merry Christmas! Out upon merry Christmas. What's Christmas time to you but a time for paying bills without money; a time for finding yourself a year older, but not an hour richer; a time for balancing your books and having every item in 'em through a round dozen of months presented dead against you? If I
