Concept Introduction:
>The alkene corresponding to the longest continuous chain that includes the double bond is considered as the parent, and the chain is numbered in the direction in which doubly bonded carbons get lower numbers. The suffix
The position of the double bond is indicated by writing the smaller number in the name out of the two double bonded carbon atoms.
>Cis and trans stereoisomers are possible only when the double bond is not a terminal double bond.
>When two similar groups are present on the same side of the double bond, the isomer is a cis isomer. If the similar groups are on the opposite sides, the isomer is a trans isomer.

Organic Chemistry - Standalone book
- There are 17 possible alkene isomers with the formula C6H12. Draw structures of the five isomers in which the longest chain has six carbon atoms, and give the name of each. Are any of these isomers chiral? (There are also eight isomers in which the longest chain has five carbon atoms, and four isomers in which the longest chain has four carbon atoms. How many can you find?)arrow_forwardCyclopropane (C3H6, a three-membered ring) is more reactive than most other cycloalkanes.(a) Draw a Lewis structure for cyclopropane.(b) Compare the bond angles of the carbon atoms in cyclopropane with those in an acyclic (noncyclic) alkane.(c) Suggest why cyclopropane is so reactive.arrow_forward1. Although there is only one alkene with the formula C2H4 (ethene) and only one with the formula C3H6 (propene), there are several alkenes with the formula C4H8. Draw all of the possible bond line structures for alkenes with the formula C4H3 including all possible structural and stereoisomers.arrow_forward
- Name and draw structural formulas for all alkenes with the molecular formula C5H10. As you draw these alkenes, remember that cis and trans isomers are different compounds and must be counted separatelyarrow_forward(a) Draw the condensed structural formulas for the cis andtrans isomers of 2-pentene. (b) Can cyclopentene exhibitcis–trans isomerism? Explain. (c) Does 1-pentyne haveenantiomers? Explain.arrow_forwardCompounds A and B are isomers of the molecular formula C9H19Br. Both yield the same alkene C in an elimination reaction. Hydrogenation of C yields the product 2,3,3,4 tetramethyl pentane. What are the structures of A, B, and C?arrow_forward
- (a) What structural feature is associated with each type of hy-drocarbon: an alkane; a cycloalkane; an alkene; an alkyne? (b) Give the general formula for each type .(c) Which hydrocarbons are considered saturated?arrow_forwardWrite structural formulas for compounds that meet the following descriptions:(a) An alkene, C6H12, that cannot have cis–trans isomersand whose longest chain is 5 carbons long(b) An alkene with a chemical formula of C10H12 that hascis–trans isomers and contains a benzene ring.arrow_forwardname and draw structural formulas for all cyclo-alkanes with the molecular formula C5H10. Be certain to include cis-trans isomers, as well as constitutional isomersarrow_forward
