Chapter 8, Problem 13A
Summary Introduction

To analyze:

The relation between anabolic and catabolic reactions and the analogy of the relationship between photosynthesis and cellular respiration.

Introduction:

The metabolic process occurs in the body. It is a sum of chemical reactions that are involved in catabolism and anabolism. Cellular respiration and photosynthesis are biological processes in that matter and energy flow through the biosphere.

Explanation of Solution

The breakdown of larger molecules resulting in the release of energy is known as catabolic reactions. The anabolic process uses the energy produced by catabolic reactions to produce larger molecules from smaller molecules, such as protein is made from amino acids. Cellular respiration and photosynthesis are responsible for the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen between living organisms and the atmosphere. Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplast of plant cells. Photosynthesis changes carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen, which is an example of anabolic process. The energy utilized here is derived from the solar energy. Glucose is a source of carbohydrate by plants, and oxygen is a byproduct.

Cellular respiration is a process that occurs in the mitochondria of all living organisms. Cellular respiration changes oxygen and glucose into carbon dioxide and water. Carbon dioxide and water are byproducts, and ATP is a source of energy that produces from the process, hence, it is catabolic process.
