Chapter 8, Problem 11A
Summary Introduction

To analyze:

The role of ATP in living organism by using an analogy.

Introduction:

ATP is adenosine triphosphate; it requires all living cells for energy supply. ATP is like money in which one needs to survive. When it is utilized, it needs to be regenerated.

Explanation of Solution

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is an energy currency that transfers chemical reactions to endergonic reactions within the cell. ATP contains a ribose sugar, adenine base, and phosphate group.

Cells require chemical energy to perform, transport of essential substances across the membrane, to drive metabolic activity and mechanical work such as movements of the muscles. When cells require energy, the storage molecule converts energy in the form of ATP. Then ATP delivers energy to the cell where energy-consuming activities take place.

An analogy between ATP and rechargeable batteries is appropriate. The rechargeable battery can be used after the input of additional energy. ATP is like a rechargeable battery, while ADP is a lower energy form. When the third phosphate is cut loose, ATP converts into ADP and the stored energy is released for biological activities. The input additional energy recharge means ADP changes into ATP.

Conclusion

Hence, the ATP is used for energy in living organism. ATP is like money to living organisms. They spent and regenerate when the cell needs.
