A company is about to invest in a joint venture research and development project with another company. The project is expected to last nine years, but yearly payments the company makes will begin immediately (a payment is made today, and the last payment is nine years from today). Salaries will account for $50,000 of each payment. The reminder of each payment will cover equipment costs and facility overhead. The initial (immediate) equipment and facility cost is $50,000. Each subsequent year this figure will drop by $5000 until a cost of $25000 is reached, after which the costs will remain constant until the end of the project.
a) Draw a cash flow diagram to illustrate the cash flows for this project.
b) At an interest rate of 10%, what is the total future worth of all project payments at the
end of the nine years?

- Cindy and Steven are recently married and are both chefs. They have recently graduated from culinary school and are making a starting salary of $15.00 as a sous-chef. They both work 10 hour days, six days a week. Because they are chefs at a mid- level restaurant they live in the downtown core where it is located. The rent on their one bedroom apartment is $1125/month. This includes all utilities. However, they pay an additional $75 for cable and internet. Their joint cell phone bill is $60.00 and they opt not to have a landline to save money. Because they live downtown they have also chosen not to buy a car and spend about $200 a month on public transportation. - You have agreed to make investment in your friends agricultural farm. This would require an amount of $20,000 as initial investment on your part. Your friend promises you revenue (before expenses) of $3600 per year the first year and thereafter the revenue increases by $200 per year. Your share of the estimated annual expenses is $1000. You are planning to invest for six years. Your friend has made the commitment to buyout your share of the business at that time for $24000. You have decided to set a personal MARR of 15% per year. Ford will increase the sticker price of the redesigned vehicle by $400. Assume this vehicle will be driven 15,000 miles per year and its life will be 10 years. - Question 2 A common economic analysis objective is to find out whether it is more profitable to purchase an asset rather than rent it. A simple case of this dilemma is currently being analyzed by a private company which wants to procure a pick-up truck for regular operation. For the next 24 months, the truck can be leased or purchased. The truck costs $9,500 if purchased now in cash. If leased, the monthly lease is $358 with the first payment due by the end of the first month. At the end of the lease term, 24 months, the truck is returned to the auto dealer with expected final repair cost of $1,000 to be paid immediately before return to dealer. If purchased, the truck can be financed through monthly payments. The financing nominal interest rate is to be negotiated with the dealer. The financing will require $2,000 down payment (paid now) and monthly payments starting at the end of the first month. After 24 months, it is expected to be worth half its purchase price. The CPI and operating expenses are followed: The CPI is expected to increase 5 percent per year. Expenses are estimated to be $9 during the first year and increase by $1 per year thereafter.
