Question
Chapter 25, Problem 2TY
Summary Introduction
Introduction:
The alteration of generation is a phenomenon exhibited by some organisms, especially plants. In this phenomenon, the plants are divided into two life forms. The two life forms are distinguished by the number of sets of chromosomes present in the plants.

(rather than herbaceous) in that the xylem often displays secondary growth (widening of the trunk).
They generally have only tracheids for water conduction and lack vessel elements, which are
characteristic of angiosperms.
Tyino
I. Division: Cycadophyta
Although there is only about 100 extant species of cycads, this phylum was significant during the
Triassic period (248 million years ago). They are tropical and subtropical plants with trunk-like stems
and compound leaves and are popular as ornamentals. These plants are dioecious in that seed
cones and pollen cones are on two separate plants. Because of their palm-like structure, they are
sometimes incorrectly described as palm trees. However, like other gymnosperms they produce
cones and lack flowers. Examples of cycads include False king sago and Florida coontie (Zamia
pumila). Zamia pumila is the only cycad native to the United States.
ACTIVITY 1: Examine the live plant and/or cones if available. (Use the atlas if necessary.)
