Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The factors that determines whether a given complex will be diamagnetic or paramagnetic has to be given.
Concept Introduction:
Diamagnetic:
The compounds in which all the electrons are paired in their orbitals are considered as diamagnetic compounds. Such compounds will be repelled by the magnetic field.
Paramagnetic:
If a compound consists of one or more unpaired electrons in their valence shell then it is known as paramagnetic compound. Such compounds will be attracted by the magnetic field.
Crystal field splitting:
When ligands approach the central metal atom then the field strength of the ligand splits the outermost valence d orbitals of the central metal atom into two set of orbitals such as
The following diagram shows the splitting in the octahedral complexes:
Splitting energy is the energy between
Pairing energy is the energy required to pair up electrons in an orbital. It is represented as

Predict the approximate wavelength and predominant color of light absorbed by the complex.arrow_forwardIs it possible to have a paramagnetic d4-tetrahedral complex ion? Explain.arrow_forwardFor each d electron configuration, state the number of unpaired electrons expected in octahedral complexes. Give an example complex for each case. (Two answers are possible for some of these cases.) (a) d2 (b) d4 (c) d6 (d) d8arrow_forward
- Define the terms complex ion, ligand, and coordination number. Use an example to illustrate the use of these terms.arrow_forwardFour different octahedral chromium coordination compounds exist that all have the same oxidation state for chromium and have H2O and Cl as the ligands and counterions. When 1 mole of each of the four compounds is dissolved in water, how many moles of silver chloride will precipitate upon addition of excess AgNO3?arrow_forward
