Concept explainers
Interpretation:
Ozonolysis of o-xylene yielded three products, glyoxal, 2,3-butanedione and pyruvaldehyde in 3:1:2 ratio. What conclusion can be obtained about the structure of o-xylene from this observation is to be stated.
Concept introduction:
During ozonolysis double bonds present in compounds gets cleaved to give carbonyl compounds. Each carbon in the double bond gets bonded to an oxygen atom. As the benzene ring can be represented by two different resonance forms during ozonolysis, compounds with substituent groups on the benzene ring yield different products. The final ratio in which different products will be formed can be arrived at by considering the products of the ozonolysis of different resonance forms of the reactant.
To state:
What conclusion can be obtained about the structure of o-xylene from the observation that upon ozonolysis it yielded three products, glyoxal, 2,3-butanedione and pyruvaldehyde in 3:1:2 ratio.

- Enamines normally react with methyl iodide to give two products: one arising from alkylation at nitrogen and the second arising from alkylation at carbon. For example, Heating the mixture of C-alkylation and N-alkylation products gives only the product from C-alkylation. Propose a mechanism for this isomerization.arrow_forwardBicyclo-2,5-heptadiene can be prepared in two steps from cyclopentadiene and vinyl chloride. Provide a mechanism for each step.arrow_forwardCompound A has molecular formula C4H10. Compound A gives two monochlorides, B and C, on photochemical chlorination. Treatment of either of these monochlorides with potassium tert-butoxide gives the same alkene (C4H8) as the product, but B leads to just one isomer of the alkene, D, whereas C gives D and another isomer of the alkene, E. Treatment of monochlorides B and C with aqueous ethanol gives products F and G, respectively, both of which are of molecular formula C4H100. What are the chemical names of compounds A-G?arrow_forward
- Isoprene has sometimes been used as a starting material in the laboratory synthesis of terpenes. In one such synthesis, the first step is the electrophilic addition of 2 mol of hydrogen bromide to isoprene to give 1,3-dibromo-3-methylbutane.Write a series of equations describing the mechanism of this reaction.arrow_forwardA compound with formula C7H12O is treated with sodium borohydride in methanol to yield 2,2-dimethylcylopentanol. Write a reaction scheme showing the structures of the reactant, the reagents, and the product. Will the product be optically active? Explain.arrow_forwardA, a compound with molecular formula C6H10, contains three methylene units. A reacts with one equivalent of H2 over Pd/C to yield B. A reacts with aqueous acid to form a single product, C, and undergoes hydroboration/oxidation to form a pair of enantiomers, D and E. Ozonolysis of A followed by reaction with dimethyl sulfide forms F with molecular formula C6H10O2. Provide structures for A–F.arrow_forward
