Chapter 14.2, Problem 8E

Broker Satisfaction. The American Association of Individual Investors (AAII) On-Line Discount Broker Survey polls members on their experiences with discount brokers. As part of the survey, members were asked to rate the quality of the speed of execution with their broker as well as provide an overall satisfaction rating for electronic trades. Possible responses (scores) were no opinion (0), unsatisfied (1), somewhat satisfied (2), satisfied (3), and very satisfied (4). For each broker summary scores were computed by calculating a weighted average of the scores provided by each respondent. A portion of the survey results follow (AAII website).

  1. a. Develop a scatter diagram for these data with the speed of execution as the independent variable.
  2. b. What does the scatter diagram developed in part (a) indicate about the relationship between the two variables?
  3. c. Develop the least squares estimated regression equation.
  4. d. Provide an interpretation for the slope of the estimated regression equation.
  5. e. Suppose Zecco.com developed new software to increase their speed of execution rating. If the new software is able to increase their speed of execution rating from the current value of 2.5 to the average speed of execution rating for the other 10 brokerage firms that were surveyed, what value would you predict for the overall satisfaction rating?

Mr. William Profit is studying companies going public for the first time. He is particularly interested in the relationship between the size of the offering and the price per share. A sample of 15 companies that recently went public revealed the following information.     Size Price   Size Price   ($ millions), per Share,   ($ millions), per Share, Company x y Company x y 1 9.0   10.8   9   160.7   11.3   2 94.4   11.3   10   96.5   10.6   3 27.3   11.2   11   83.0   10.5   4 179.2   11.1   12   23.5   10.3   5 71.9   11.1   13   58.7   10.7   6 97.9   11.2   14   93.8   11.0   7 93.5   11.0   15   34.4   10.8   8 70.0   10.7                      Click here for the Excel Data File a. 2. A regression model to predict a state's burglary crime rate per 100,000 people in 2005 (y) used the following four independent variables: £₁ = median age, x2 = number of bankruptcies per 1,000 people, x3 = federal expenditures per capita, and x4 = high school graduation percentage. A summary of the regression output is below. Variable (nickname) Intercept Median age (AgeMed) Bankruptcies (Bankrupt) Coefficient 4,198.5808 -27.3540 17.4893 -0.0124 -29.0314 Federal expenditures (FedSpend) Graduation rate (HSGrad%) (a) Write the fitted regression equation. Most engaged couples expect or at least hope that they will have high levels of marital satisfaction. However, because 54% of first marriages end in divorce, social scientists have begun investigating influences on marital satisfaction. (Data Source: National Center for Health Statistics.) A counseling psychologist sets out to look at the role of having children in relationship longevity. She decides to measure marital satisfaction in a group of couples with children and a group of childless couples. She chooses the Marital Satisfaction Inventory, because it refers to "partner" and "relationship" rather than "spouse" and "marriage," which makes it useful for research with both traditional and nontraditional couples. Higher scores on the Marital Satisfaction Inventory indicate greater satisfaction. Assume that these scores are normally distributed. A sample of 39 couples with children scored an average of 51.1 with a sample standard deviation of 9.2 on the Marital Satisfaction…
