Because of this, every major airline experienced a drop in stock prices from February 2020 to November 2020. But these drops ranged from 57% for American Airlines to 21% for Southwest Airlines. Why such a difference? Investopedia points out that Southwest has extremely efficient operations, low-cost pricing, and innovative logistics solutions. In addition, they incorporate customer experience and forward planning into their strategy. All of these things helped Southwest to weather the pandemic, and they all require that Southwest maintains careful control over its operations. One of the other things that helped Southwest during the pandemic was their superior service desk performance. They achieved this performance, in part, through measuring key factors in customer service, looking at customer service leaders (benchmarking), and making changes to bring their customer service costs…arrow_forward

- This question builds on your work from B-1. Competition is fierce for the Chicago to Atlanta route, and the airline realizes that it may need to reduce the current ticket price. They ask you to provide projections for number of reservations, number of denied passenger check ins (due to overbooking), penalties, sales, net income, and profit margin for this route at different ticket prices. The average number of reservations for this route is 184 when the ticket price is $420, use those figures as a base for your calculations. The airline conducted a price sensitivity analysis and determined that for every $20 increase in ticket price, demand will decrease by 1 ticket reservation. Similarly, ticket sales will increase by 1 reservation for every $20 decrease in ticket price. Using an appropriate data table, calculate the number of reservations, number of passengers denied check ins (due to overbooking), total penalties, total sales, net income, and profit margin (as a percentage) for…arrow_forwardProblem-solving 2: Dropping or Retaining a Flight Profits have been decreasing for several years at Pegasus Airlines. - Explain why proponents of LIFO argue that it provides a better match of revenue and expenses. In what situations would it not provide a better match? Be specific. The management of the Esquire Oil Company believes that the wholesale price of heating oil that they sell to homeowners will increase again as the result of increased political problems in the Middle East. The company is currently paying $0.80 per gallon. If they are willing to enter an agreement in November 2021 to purchase a million gallons of heating oil during the winter of 2022, their supplier will guarantee the price at $0.80 per gallon. However, if the winter is a mild one, Esquire would not be able to sell a million gallons unless they reduced their retail price and thereby increase the risk of a loss for the year. On the other hand, if the wholesale price did increase substantially, they would be in a favorable position with respect to their competitors. The company’s fiscal year-end is December 31.
