Chapter 12, Problem 15TYK

A mix-up in a hospital ward caused a mother with O and MN blood types to think that a baby given to her really belonged to someone else. Tests in the hospital showed that the doubting mother was able to taste PTC (see problem 9). The baby given to her had O and MN blood types and had no reaction when the bitter PTC chemical was placed on its tongue. The mother had four other children with the following blood types and tasting abilities for PTC:

1. type A and MN blood, taster

2. type B and N blood, nontaster

3. type A and M blood, taster

4. type A and N blood, taster

Without knowing the father’s blood types and tasting ability, can you determine whether the child is really hers? (Assume that all her children have the same father.)

A polydactylous, normal-visioned, brown-eyed man with wavy hair has a nonpolydactylous, blue-eyed mother. He proposed marriage to a nonpolydactylous, astigmatic, blue-eyed, and curly-haired lady whose mother has normal vision. However, the lady is worried about the proposal since sickle-cell anemia has been known to run in both their families. If it turned out that the lady is a carrier and the man has normal RBC, what would be their COMPLETE genotypes? Based on their genotypes, what is the probability that they would have: 1. nonpolydactylous child with normal vision? 2. polydactylous, astigmatic child and sickle-trait carrier? 3. a boy with his father’s genotype? 4. a girl with her mother’s genotype?
Jane (mother): Tt XcXc IBi -Taster, Color-blind female, Blood type B John (father): tt XcY IAIB- Non-taster, Color-blind male, Blood type AB Explain whether or not these two parents could possibly produce a normal visioned child who has blood type O? Explain whether or not these two parents could possibly produce a color blind child, who could not taste PTC paper, and has blood type A?                                                      What blood types could the children of this couple possibly have? How many phenotypically different "kinds" of children could this couple produce? List a maximum of eight phenotypes. Sorry for asking so many questions but they are related. Please I need your help in a few minutes.
Mrs. Kaur and Mrs. Sharma had babies on the same day at the same hospital. Mrs. Kaur took home a girl (Harleen) and Mrs. Sharma received a boy (Baldeep). However, Mrs. Sharma was sure she had given birth to a girl and brought a suit against the hospital. Blood tests showed that Mr. Sharma was type O. Mrs. Sharma was type AB and Mr. & Mrs. Kaur were both type B. Harleen was type O and Baldeep was type A. Had a mistake occurred? Did the parents bring home the incorrect babies? a. What is Mr.sharma genotype b. What is Mrs.sharma genotype c. What is Mrs. Kaur genotype Has a switch occurred? Why or why not?
