Police officers in Australia are exposed to a range of risks through their workplace. Some of the risks include manual risks / injury psychosocial risks / depression and post traumatic street disorder. The risks can vary according to what action the police officer is undertaking at the time of their job. It is imperative that the health and safety is taken into account and appropriate preventative strategies are in place to control and reduce the risks that the officers are exposed to on a daily basis.
Legally police departments in Australia are responsibly for policies and strategies to ensure the safety of their members these legislative requirements are in the occupational health and safety acts of each state. To ensure proper safety regular

They are a result of the following aspects of work and their interaction: For example one hazard police officers encounter in their work is assault.
In Australia assaults are common in that approximately 10% of all officers will be assaulted in some form during their career (aic, 2012) Police officers are most at risk of assault injuries when attending domestic disturbances increasing in risk if the offender is under the influence of alcohol or drugs increasing again if the offender is also carrying a weapon i.e. gun or

Confidential counselling and medical services are usually also available through any police organisation. It is important that presenters of these training programs are fellow officers that are knowledgeable so that their colleagues have confidence in the information and their fears and worries are reduced. Other areas to assist in improving psychosocial health and preventing exacerbated symptoms are maintaining optimal physical fitness optimal sleep patterns and a healthy diet. Limiting the amount of overtime police officers are often ordered to do by streamlining administrative procedures by enhancing computer technology, can also prevent fatigue. For example the use of computer generated voice recognition can assist officers in eliminating the need to base themselves at a
* The police has many dangers due to the criminals is society today. Officers may be fired at while on duty, injured on a pursuit, or even on a simple traffic stop. Another danger with police is the amount of stress they receive while providing service.
Suicide among police officers is a dramatic example of what can happen when those entrusted with the protection of others fail to protect and care for themselves (Suicide and the Police Officer, 2006). Police officers tend to create an identify for themselves in order to seem powerful, in-charge, and unwavering in the line of duty, when in reality the persona that they create can lead to officers breaking down physically and mentally (McCord 368). After an officer joins the police force, they are expected to accept the fact that there will be violence and trauma in their line of work. There are no mental health checkpoints that officers are required to meet in order to continue working in these stressful conditions, forcing
There are cases in which police officers are found dealing drugs such as bhang or methamphetamines or officers end up shooting mentally ill people they have been called to help restrain. In the latter, case proper training on how to
Burnout in police officers has been affixed to policing. Burnout is described by symptoms relating to emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced sense of personal accomplishment (Johnson, Todd and Subramanian 2005; Jackson and Maslach 1982). It will be argued that burnout is not entirely unfavourable.
Reporting of Injuries,Diseases and dangerous occurrences regulations of 1995 requires the reporting of work-related accidents, diseases and dangerous occurrences. The Act applies to all work related activities, but not to all work related incidents. The objective of the regulations is to enable the enforcing authorities to identify where and how risks arise and to investigate serious accidents so as to prevent them from occurring in the future and thus providing a safer work environment. The enforcing authorities can then help and advise you on preventive action to reduce injury, ill health and accidental loss, the main points of our own policy that relate to this are:
While being a police officer, you have guidelines and rules that you need to follow just as if you worked as a chef or even a sales associate you have rules
Becoming a police officer requires physical and mental dedication. Officers deal with different groups of people each day on a daily basis risking their lives to serve and protect which makes the job challenging. As a officer of law enforcement physical health including stress overall from the job causes mental breakdown and fatigue which can lead to depression
Hypervigilance by definition is,“A worldview based on a “threat based” biologically driven perspective in which everyday events unfold as potentially dangerous to officer safety.” (Gilmartin, 2002 p.6). A police officer works in an environment where they have to be reactive and it is hard to turn off. This can exhausting and can lead some to depression. Officers in turn will work side jobs to fulfill the need to constantly have the feeling of being hypervigilant and be around their work family. However, this can cause issues within a home or in a relationship. It can take a negative toll on the body physically. It causes increased blood pressure, respiration, body temperature and other functions. (2002). It is imperative that an officer finds
Jessie, I really enjoyed your post as I have been a police officer for 18 years and it directly relates to my job. Yes, police departments across the country must strive to make their departments more diverse, especially with the rising Hispanic population. One main hindrance to this goal is the fact that many cities are doing away with pension programs and starting hybrid or 401K retirement plans. At my agency, the Knoxville Police Department, we are having problems getting any race to apply because of the new hybrid system. I would recommend offering ride-a-long and cadet programs to attract more minorities to the field. As far as keeping arrest numbers equal to the makeup of the population, there is no way to make this happen
In addition, police officer exposed to high levels of stress relate to their job have been at an increased risk for adverse health problems, including depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder, (Grant & Terry, 2012).
As crime coexists with humanity, the presence of the police force ensures the suppression of crime and the safety for our society. Every occupation has its own work stress. What is unique is all the different stress found in one job. Aside from the heroic services police officers perform in their duty, they experience overwhelming stress in their daily duty. Police stress refers to the negative pressures related to police work (Police Stress, n.d.). In order to maintain peace and order, there must be an effective police force up and running. For that to happen, departments need to be aware and deal with the negative effects caused by police stress. Whereas, police officers must conquer their stress in order to work at their

The history of policing can be traced back to the beginning of time. When looking at the subject of police work there is a large culture and history that follows along with it. There are many topics that can be analyzed when identifying, and describing the elements and the significances that are associated with policing. A large element of the police job that plays a large factor in the work and attributes to the policing culture is the amount of stress that an office will face while performing on the job. Another part of the job that plays a large part in the culture
Interestingly, physical danger is ranked low on the list of stresses by police officers! A study of 2376 Buffalo NY police officers found that compared to the white male population police officers had higher mortality rates for cancer, suicide, and heart disease (Constant). Suicide is one of the worst effects that stress can have on police officers.
In conclusion; the researcher’s claim that police officers would be susceptible to environmental factors (heat) is supported, and that their official police force training was not enough for them to learn to separate these factors from the situation presented.
