My maternal grandpa was diagnosed with blood cancer, lymphoma to be exact when I was just 6 years old. He battled with it on and off for what seemed to be a very long 8 years until he lost the fight in 2003. It's hard to believe that was 11 years ago. It was difficult for my family and I to see him in so much pain whenever he would relapse. We would all notice a huge difference in his appearance and attitude as the cancer progressed. This was the only major long lasting health condition that has been in my family. There are 3 basic types of blood cancer which include leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

Leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma each also have different symptoms than the ones listed. Depending on which type of blood cancer a person is diagnosed with, depends on the specific symptoms they are most likely to encounter. My grandpa went to the hospital because he noticed a large lump in his neck and something that felt like a ball in his stomach; this is also a possible sign of lymphoma.
Differential Diagnosis
CBC (Complete Blood Count): This blood test measures the amount of various types of blood cells in a sample of the blood. Blood cancers may be detected using this test if too many or too few of a type of blood cell or abnormal cells are found. A bone marrow biopsy may help confirm a diagnosis of a blood cancer ("Leukemia Home Page - National Cancer Institute").
Urine cytology: Examining a urine sample under a microscope may reveal cancer cells that could come from the bladder, ureters or kidneys ("Leukemia Home Page - National Cancer Institute").
Blood protein testing: A test to examine various proteins in the blood can aid in detecting certain abnormal immune system proteins that are sometimes elevated in people with multiple myeloma ("Leukemia Home Page - National Cancer Institute").
Spinal tap: The doctor takes some of the clear fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord to check it for cancer
