Are Professional Athletes Overpaid? The passages present a discussion about arguments concerning whether or not professional athletes are overpaid. This is an important debate since professional sports represents a multi-billion-dollar-per-year industry. The two positions argue whether or not professional athletes should be paid the large yearly salaries they are paid. Both viewpoints have valid claims warranting consideration. For example, evidence suggests that people with far more important jobs are paid much less than professional athletes; in contrast, opposing evidence suggests that since professional athletes generally have short careers and must train very hard to build and maintain their skills, the higher salary is justified. While both sides of the issue have valid points, the viewpoint that professional athletes are not overpaid is the best-supported position, the position supported by the preponderance of the evidence cited in the passages. The strongest and best reasons supporting this position are that professional athletes must endure grueling and intensive training, they generally have short careers that often end in injury, and the amount that they are thought to be paid is often inflated. Accordingly, these reasons and opposing viewpoints will be discussed next. The first pertinent point to make on behalf of the argument that professional athletes are not overpaid is that they must endure grueling and intensive training. For example, athletes must
Do I think athletes are overpaid? In my mind, absolutely not. Giancarlo Stanton of the Miami Marlins was given a three hundred plus million dollar contract over thirteen years. A long time ago, the United States bought Alaska for seven point two million dollars.. Granted that money was probably way more valuable then it is now, but now it seems like millions of
Professional athletes are highly talented and determined entertainers with extraordinary physical abilities. They compete in various sports to entertain people and make a living. Those include basketball, football, baseball, hockey, tennis, and the list goes on to any athlete that gets paid to play. These athletes train really hard and for long hours to be the best at what they do. Fans pay to watch them perform because they really enjoy seeing them. Like other entertainers, such as actors and singers, athletes are paid large amounts for their performances. Professional athletes are not overpaid for the amount of physical and mental stress they go through to do their job.
Do you think professional athletes are overpaid? You might think they earn more than what they are worth for playing half a year, but athletes have many things which contribute to their salary. Some of these things include their earnings from endorsements, ticket sales, performance, merchandise, their social contributions, and TV ratings. Although there are many factors that contribute to their salary, professional athletes may be overpaid because as a society, we contribute to their success. So, in the end, part of the athlete’s salary comes from the people who support the sports in the first place. These are just some of the reasons why athletes are paid so much money.
Sports are part of the everyday life of many people across the world, and in the United States sports are even more present in its society's life due to the fact that there are four major sports in the country. But should the professional athletes from these sports earn salaries as high as ten or twentieth times more than the national average wage? The answer should be NO. Professional athletes must be well remunerated but can not be overpaid when there are many issues around the world that can be solved with money. At this present age, professional athletes do not play for the love of the sport, and what they really care is what is going to be the amount of money in their contracts. The fans who support their teams have the majority of guilt in the high salaries of these athletes. Any team or franchise of any sport will not be able pay excessive salaries to their players if they do not sell jerseys, tickets, packages trip, accessories related to players, and games package on TV cables. The national government should intervene in the sports federation's policies and set a salary cap that do not diverges from its population reality.
Athletes are overpaid by their couches and businesses just for playing in their team’s games and doing commercials. Even after they retire they still make more money than they work for. They are paid millions every year, Shaqeel Oneel made enough money that he could hire builders to make him a full sized basketball court in his basement. Furthermore, Peyton Manning makes about 700 thousand after he retired. Most athletes don’t know how to handle that much money a pro football player bought a Ferrari even though he didn’t know how to drive. Another pro NFL player spent 30 thousand dollars on earrings. Some pro athletes know how to spend money a few athletes invested their money in companies. Other athletes donated to charities and other organizations. Few athletes do
For the longest time, college athletes have poured their heart into their sport and worked very hard every day of every week. These athletes have proven themselves enough to able to show off their ability and talents at a university. These college athletes have a job and work too. Their job is to bring in money for the university they are playing for. In order for these athletes to play well enough to be considered able to bring in profit for the university, they must play a sport that they love to play and not a sport that they are forced to play. Over time, the main question that is on everyones mind is should students that play the sport they love for a university get paid simply because they are a college athlete that is displayed on television. My goal for this paper is to inform you of the reasons I believe they should get paid.
Collegiate athletes should be getting paid for the work they do because of how profitable college sports is to the schools. During the last twenty years, college sports has gained a lot of popularity which has resulted in a large amount of revenue for the NCAA and the schools that they represent. The athletes who perform on the field and court see none of that money. This paper will explain some of the main reasons for college athletes should get paid. College athletics is a billion dollar industry and has been successfully operating for years.
Whether you are on a college campus or listening to a sports talk radio show, the question of should college athletes be paid seems to have been discussed forever. One of the major arguments for paying student athletes is that the colleges use the athletes to generate revenue for the college. “There are also those that argue that athletes should be paid for the hours that they often put in their respective sports and classrooms” (Jung, 2013).
All around the world sports are the topic of discussion, both teams and athletes bring forth millions of viewers to see what a sports team is made up of. College is where a student gets the opportunity to shine. If a college athlete possesses a significant amount of talent they have the potential to become a professional. At a college level, students don’t receive payment; regardless of what level an athlete is on, when an individual has a natural talent the individual should be paid for doing what he is good at. This idea of not paying student athletes needs to change because these student athletes have become involved in a craft and deserve compensation for their involvement. Three key elements that is discussed in this essay will give probable cause for athletes to be compensated. The three factors that are analyzed in this essay is the commitment of time that a player sets into his or her sport, the large debt accumulated while in school, and the amount of money colleges earn through student athletes. All three aspects are valid reasons as to why colleges must start paying their athletes.
" Professional athletes are paid exactly what they deserve because they work harder and sacrifice more than most people think. The majority of people think athletes are overpaid because they see huge contracts come out every year, but this only happens for the best of the best. It isn't everyday that someone in professional sports gets twenty million dollars a year all of a sudden. They worked for it.
There are many reasons why athletes are not overpaid. For example, professional athletes deserve exorbitant salaries so that it can carry them for the short amount of time they can play. If an athlete only plays for five years, they would need to have money that could carry them for a protracted time. If athletes made what ordinary people made, then we would be seeing famous athletes on the streets
Athletes suit up and perform on a daily and weekly basis. Week in and week out, athletes draw in thousands and thousands of fans to speculate the flashy performance. They give the best effort, putting themselves at risk, doing anything possible to insure a victory. Many hours of hard work are spent to perform the best they can. Through the dedication and performance of these athletes, speculations have aroused that athletes should begin to receive pay. Some people believe that colligate athletes should be paid due to their performance as professional sport athletes do. The idea may sound fruitful, but it also poses many problems. I believe that colligate athletes should not be paid due to the scholarships available, the yearly college budget, and the decreases in interest in grades.
In today’s society many will argue whether or not professional athletes are overpaid. In the present time athletes are being paid phenomenally large amounts of money for their entertainment. It is my claim that all professional athletes are overpaid because they do not offer society an essential function that improves or enhances our world in comparison to other professionals such as medical doctors, lawyers, and teachers. Society does not value entertainment enough to warrant such high salaries such as those of many professional athletes. There is no reason that these athletes should demand these tremendous amounts of money. This is why you have to put into question their reasoning for demanding
Today in sports, there has been several various issues that have emerged. The particular issue that concerns me the most is, if college athletes should be paid. I would consider this a major issue today, because we live in a society where professional athletes are paid millions to play sports. I selected this issue because, in my opinion, it has a substantial amount of controversy compared to other topics. In my project I plan to enlightened and inform others with background knowledge of this topic. In addition, I plan to address the many different advantages and disadvantages there is to paying college athletes.
Some people argue that,’’ College athletes are not professionals and therefore should not be paid’’(Salvadore). They say athletes play at the college level and can further apply that experience at the professional level where they will be paid, just like everybody else. In professional sports you have to be the best of the best and you need to have worked at your sport since you were little.
