Professional athletes in the United States are given extremely substantial contracts and lucrative endorsement deals and it has been argued that their salaries should be reduced to smaller wages but others say they are paid accordingly. The argument that athletes are overpaid not only exists in the United States but also all over the world. Most countries however do not have the variety of major sports that the U.S. has. When athletes are being paid millions of dollars each year, it raises an important discussion. This discussion is about how we value and compensate athletes and whether or not their salary is too much. Professional athletes are highly talented and determined entertainers with extraordinary physical abilities. They compete in various sports to entertain people and make a living. Those include basketball, football, baseball, hockey, tennis, and the list goes on to any athlete that gets paid to play. These athletes train really hard and for long hours to be the best at what they do. Fans pay to watch them perform because they really enjoy seeing them. Like other entertainers, such as actors and singers, athletes are paid large amounts for their performances. Professional athletes are not overpaid for the amount of physical and mental stress they go through to do their job.

The average nurse only makes $70,000 a year which is a very small amount compared to the millions professional athletes make in a year. Athletes are vastly overpaid compared to people who risk their lives every day to make the world a better place. Some think that athletes are overpaid. Others disagree saying that they need millions of dollars to get by after their sports career is over. Athletes get millions more than the average family every year and only play for a portion of their lives.

Most people can’t get that amount of money in their lifetime. In my opinion athlete’s salaries are way too high for what they’re doing. They are just entertaining people around the world and should not get millions of dollars for it. There are a lot of people in this world that work harder than athletes and have jobs that benefit society and don’t get paid as much as athletes do. People who have jobs and make an impact on society should make more money than athletes that are just entertaining

The salaries of athletes were only peanuts twenty to thirty years ago compared to what their salaries are today. However, in my opinion, I believe the world of sports in the United States is far from reasonable when it comes to athletes’ salaries. Many fans are outraged with the high priced contracts given to professional athletes these days. I can’t blame them, many athletes are making more money in just one year than the average citizen will make in their lifetime. Though economics is key in the understanding of why athletes earn such tremendous salaries, but it still fails to explain why they actually deserve it. The justification is that the high salaries distinguish the “stars” from the “normal players,” however I feel that these salaries are not at all reflective of an athlete’s economic importance. Their salaries keep increasing because they know that the public will continue paying for it. I argue that the time commitments these athletes make do not in any way justify their salaries. Teachers, doctors, lawyers, even the president of the United States of America’s time are also valuable to our everyday lives in order to keep the world moving and to better society and yet their salaries don’t justify their time

Athletes are way overpaid for what they do. Americans are struggling to make make a living because to live is costly you have to make mortgage payments, students loans,, groceries, clothes, and shoes. Even finding good employment that pays good money can be hard. Professional athletes do work hard, and do deserve a decent amount of money but should they really be making as much as they do for swinging a bat, for shooting a three pointer, or kicking a ball. The average American is paid less in a lifetime than a professional athlete in a year!

Should athletes receive the salary they make in 1 year? Athletes should make that amount of money because even though some people think athletes are paid too much because they think people who save lives are doing better deeds than athletes and some people think they deserve it because all of the bad things that could happen in a career of a football or any sport that is played that could be career ending for the athlete. Even though athletes earn more than people who risk their lives to save someone else’s, athletes are not overpaid because athletes have chronic health problems that take from their salaries, and some athletes donate money to charities for people who were affected by hurricanes or other bad event that happened.
