Sparta

Sparta was a mean society. The city state in ancient Greece arose in 404 B.C. It was called Sparta. Weak minds, high violence, and harsh rules made it all that much worse. Boys were taken from their families and were taught to steal, fight, and were not taught importance of math and english. The weaknesses of Sparta outweighed the strengths because The Spartans encouraged beating children, babies not strong enough were shipped out to die, and Spartan warriors killed innocent Helots. As the ancient Greek history shows, two well-known cities were Sparta and Athens. Each city-state was built on different and similar values. However if one was to compare these equally great city-states under the same umbrella, the question regarding which one had the best expression of arete would arise? In my critical opinion, Sparta was more representative of arete due to focusing completely on their primary goal: to be brave warriors. Sparta was a standout amongst the most critical Greek city-states all through the Archaic and Classical periods and was well known for its military ability. The expert and very much prepared Spartan hoplites with their particular red shrouds, long hair, and lambda-decorated shields were likely the best and most dreaded warriors in Greece, battling with unique excellence at such key fights as Thermopylae and Plataea in the mid-fifth century BCE.
