Antonio learns about the golden carp from Cico, a friend of his. According to Cico, the golden carp was once a god who loved the people of Antonio's town, Guadalupe. The people were not allowed to fish for the brown carp that lived in the river that flowed around the town. These fish were sacred to the gods. However, because of a drought and no food, the people had to eat the carp to survive. This angered the gods. They wanted to punish all the people by

Bless Me, Ultima By Rudolfo Anaya Ayanna Higgins Mr. Amoroso AP Literature Topic #1 It is inevitable that certain moments in your life will affect how you think and act forever. These epiphanies can occur anywhere and anytime throughout life, whether it be when you're an immature child or a fully developed adult. The sudden realization can be shocking and life changing or so miniscule that you don’t realize the change within yourself. In Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya, Antonio
examples of invasive species in Ontario waters include the round goby, zebra mussels, eurasian ruffe, goldfish, northern snakehead, rainbow smelt, and rudd, to name a few. A great example to show how destructive an introduced fish can be is the asian carp, this species spreads very aggressively and it is considered the greatest threat to aquatic ecosystems in Ontario. These fish grow to be very large in size, up to 40 kg and 1 meter long. The asian
Or choose from the power of the golden carp or the magic of your Ultima.” Antonio has been conflicted between the three unexplainable paths of Catholicism, the golden carp, and Ultima that his mind has formed. Catholicism is something he has grown up with and has had complete faith over until he was introduced to the golden carp who Antonio had an easier time proving its existence and not question it as
like the golden carp, the owl, and water. The symbolism enriches the text by adding depth to magical realism. The golden carp provides Tony with what he expected God to and it symbolizes a non-catholic god. As Tony says while seeing the carp for the first time "The golden carp," I whispered in awe. I could not have been more entranced if I had seen the Virgin, or God
Another interesting issue is the carp that were introduced to the dams by fisherman ("General information about carp - biology, ecology and impacts | NSW Department of Primary Industries", 2016). The carp in the dams spread through the river system and are causing havoc as they breed rapidly and lower the water quality. The carp are also suspected of coming from fisherman who used them as live bait. There is now an eradication plan underway using daughterless carp (The Australian Government, 2012)
is telling him about the golden carp god. Furthermore, while Antonio is supposed to be praying to God he says, "There wasn't time to discover Him, like I could do when I sat on the creek bank and watched the golden carp swim in the sun-filtered waters" (233). I think this shows that Antonio feels a deeper connection to nature and the golden carp than he does to God and traditional values. He is more like Ultima, than like either one of his parents. The golden carp offer Antonio a way of thinking
From what I could interpret of the final chapters; Antonio starts to understand that can combine all perspectives into one idea. The beauty he learns from his mother is the moon and earth. The ways of the Lunas tied down to settled way of life to the earth. From his father he learns a different way of life of the wind and sea being free. Lastly he learns from Ultima about the beauty of earths magical and spiritual elements that have overcome every obstacle they encountered. As a result of the realization
One way the author reflects the hopes, fears and expectations of the culture in the book was through Antonio’s dreams. Antonio’s dream reflected several of his most difficult cultural challenges including his parents conflicting aspirations and the towns conflicting religious beliefs. For example, in the beginning of the story, Antonio dreamt about his parents and their families conflicting cultural arguments about their future expectations of what they wanted Antonio to be, either a priest or
