Shirl J. Hoffman, EdD, is a professor of exercise and sport science at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro where he was head of the department for ten years. He has served at all levels of higher education, from research university to liberal arts college. Hoffman has published extensively on a variety of topics, including sport philosophy and ethics, sport sociology, and motor learning and performance. He also has been a frequent commentator on problems in kinesiology and higher education. He is former editor of Quest and associate editor of the Chronicle for Physical Education in Higher Education.

Hoffman is a member of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education and the National Association for Physical Education in Higher Education. He gave the Dudley Sargent Lecture to the National Association for Physical Education in Higher Education in 1998.

Hoffman and his wife, Claude, reside in Greensboro, North Carolina. He enjoys walking, swimming, golf, and traveling.

Janet C. Harris, PhD, is professor and chair of the department of kinesiology and physical education at California State University, Los Angeles. Harris was editor of Quest from 1989 to 1991 and served as president of the AAPHERD Research Consortium from 1992 to 1993. Two of her most noted publications include �Broadening Horizons: Interpretive Cultural Research, Hermeneutics, and Scholarly Inquiry in Physical Education� and Using Kinesiology: A Comparison of Applied Veins in the Subdisciplines�, both of which appeared in Quest.

Harris is a fellow of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education and a member of the National Association for Physical Education in Higher Education. She served as the Amy Morris Homens Lecturer for the National Association for Physical Education in Higher Education in 1992.

Harris received her PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. She resides in Los Angeles and enjoys urban hiking, working out, and people-watching.
