Putting Numbers into Perspective. A large number can be put into perspective by comparing it with another number For example, we put the $18.9 trillion national debt in perspective (Example 12) by comparing this number to the number or U.S. citizens.
For this project, each group member should consult an almanac, a newspaper, or the Internet to rind a number greater than one million. Explain to other members of the group the context in which the large number is used. Express the number in scientific notation. Then put the number into perspective by comparing it with another number.

- Pet Owners According to the Humane Society, in 2015, 65% of U.S. households owned at least one pet, and 42% of households who did own pets owned at least two. The U.S. Census Bureau tells us that there were 117 million households in 2015. How many households owned at least two pets? Report your answer in millions rounded to two places.arrow_forwardName the four parts of a mathematical system. HINT: See Section 1.3arrow_forwardNational Debt In mid-2015 the U.S. population was about 321 million. The national debt was well over 18 trillion. In millions of dollars, the debt was 18,151,998. How much did each American owe in mid-2015? Report your answer in thousands of dollars rounded to the nearest whole number.arrow_forward
- In Example 5, after how many days are 250 students infected?arrow_forwardName the four characteristics of a good definition.arrow_forwardCholesterol Cholesterol in human blood is necessary, but too much can lead to health problems. There are three main types of cholesterol: HDL (high-density lipoproteins), LDL (low-density lipoproteins), and VLDL (very low-density lipoproteins). HDL is considered “good” cholesterol; LDL and VLDL are considered “bad” cholesterol. A standard fasting cholesterol blood test measures total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. These numbers are used to estimate LDL and VLDL, which are difficult to measure directly. Your doctor recommends that your combined LDL/VLDL cholesterol level be less than 130 milligrams per deciliter, your HDL cholesterol level be at least 60 milligrams per deciliter, and your total cholesterol level be no more than 200 milligrams per deciliter. (a) Write a system of linear inequalities for the recommended cholesterol levels. Let x represent the HDL cholesterol level, and let y represent the combined LDL VLDL cholesterol level. (b) Graph the system of inequalities from part (a). Label any vertices of the solution region. (c) Is the following set of cholesterol levels within the recommendations? Explain. LDL/VLDL: 120 milligrams per deciliter HDL: 90 milligrams per deciliter Total: 210 milligrams per deciliter (d) Give an example of cholesterol levels in which the LDL/VLDL cholesterol level is too high but the HDL cholesterol level is acceptable. (e) Another recommendation is that the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol be less than 4 (that is, less than 4 to 1). Identify a point in the solution region from part (b) that meets this recommendation, and explain why it meets the recommendation.arrow_forward

A.Convert the 4.3 billion robocalls per month into a number and time frame that is smaller and more understandable. Maybe that’s calls per day, or calls per hour, or calls per minute. Do the calculations, choose one and explain why you think it is the best choice. b.Given what you know about the population of the US and the number of robocalls you and people you know receive, discuss if you think the number of robocalls reported in the article is too small, to large, or just right.arrow_forward
