Answer to Problem 4.17E

The probability P(both either jack or face) is 711326 .

Explanation of Solution

Given information:

As mentioned in problem two cards are drawn out of deck of cards.

Formula:

Total number of jack cards is 4 and face is 12 .

Number of probability=No. of outcomeTotal no. of outcome.

Total probability P(both either jack or face) = p(AB)=p(A)+P(B)P(AB) .

Calculation:

Consider the statement that two cards are drawn out of deck of cards.

Since total number of cards in the deck is 52 .

Two cards are drawn from the deck of cards.

Therefore n(s) =event of two cards drawn =52C252×512=1326.

Recall that there are 4 jack card and 12 face card.

Event of both jack card are n(A)=4C24×3×22×2=6.

Event of ace card are n(B)=12C2=12×11×10!10!×2!=12×112=66.

Event of both black and face card is n(AB) =2C2=1 .

Recall number of probability of jack cards=No. of outcomeTotal no. of outcome=p(A)=n(A)n(s)=61326 .

Recall number of probability of face cards=No. of outcomeTotal no. of outcome=p(B)=n(B)n(s)=661326.

Recall that probability of both black and ace card p(AB)=n(AB)n(s)=11326.

Therefore the probability P(both either jack or face) is p(AB)=p(A)+P(B)P(AB) .

Therefore p(AB)=61326+66132611326=711326.

Therefore probability P(both either jack or face) is 711326 .
