Chapter 9, Problem 1TC

Explanation of Solution

Given:

The five computers with three network jacks are connected to a hallway switch.

The second switch is to be installed in a room which has four network ports, one of which is used to connect the switch to a wall jack.

Five ports are available: three switch ports in a room and two wall jacks.

While configuring, computers connected to the wall jacks work fine, whereas computers connected to the room’s switch are not able to connect to the established network.

To find:The way to diagnose the problem, and the next step that Linda should take after a failed attempt at connecting the computers to the network ports.

Solution:

To diagnose Linda’s failed attempt at installation, and to configure the network while installing with the computer, the following measures should be attempted:

Try to test the non-working computer by connecting it with the wall jack. If it works, then there is a problem with the switch, or with the wall jack to which the switch was connected.

To overcome the above-stated problem:

Try installing the switch on a good jack or replace the switch’s cable. If the issue persists, replace the switch itself.

In Figure Z, S1 connects to Computer A with an Ethernet Cable. In the older days, you needed to be very specific regarding the Ethernet Cable that should connect from S1 to Computer A. (Hint: We are talking about Straight through vs. Crossover Cables.) What type of cable should be used to connect S1 and A? What about the cable connecting S1 and R1? What if R1 is directly connected to Computer A (without the switch). What about two computers connecting to each other directly through an Ethernet Cable? why do we not need to worry about whether the cable is Straight through or Crossover Cable when connecting devices these days?
There are no ports that are accessible that meet the criteria that you have specified. Your uncle gave you a brand new computer screen for Christmas, and it's just fantastic. The present was really kind of him. Since there are no ports on the front of your computer, the rear does not have any either. As a result, there is no way for the connection at the other end of the cable to be accepted. Who can predict what will take place in the years to come?
A widget manufacturer has installed new network servers, changing its network from P2P, to client/server-based networks. The network consists of 200 users who make an average of $20 an hour, working on 100 workstations. Previously, none of the workstations involved in the network had anti-virus software installed on the machines. This was because there was no connection to the Internet and the workstations did not have USB/disk drives or Internet connectivity, so the risk of viruses was deemed minimal. One of the new servers provides a broadband connection to the Internet, which employees can now use to send and receive email and surf the Internet. One of the managers read in a trade magazine that other widget companies have reported an annual 75% chance of virus infection after installing T1 lines, and it may take up to 3 hours to restore the system. A vendor will sell licensed copies of antivirus for all servers and the 100 workstations at a cost of $8,700 per year. The company has…
