Concept explainers
Explain all answers clearly, with complete sentences and proper essay structure if needed. An asterisk(*) designates a quantitative problem, for which you should show all your work.
Homes to Civilization? We do not yet know how many stars have Earth like planets, nor do we know the likelihood that such planets harbor advanced civilizations like our own. However, some stars can probably be ruled out as candidates for advanced civilizations. For example, given that it look a few billion years for humans to evolve on Earth, it seems unlikely that advanced life would have had time to evolve around a star that is only a few million years old. For each of the following stars, decide whether you think it is possible that it could harbor an advanced civilization. Explain your reasoning in one or two paragraphs.
a. A
b. A
C. A
d. A

If the energy of a photon is given by the equation E = hv, where h is known as Planck's constant, and has the value of h = 4.136 x 10-15 eV -s, then complete the following table. Please note: the unit called an electron volt (eV) is a unit of energy whose value is compa- rable to the values seen in atomic transitions, and a Hertz is Hz = 1/s. What is the rate of change of its total surface area when its radius and height are 60 cm and 140 cm, respectively?arrow_forwardInstructions: Your task is to create a model in response to the prompts in the question below. Be sure to apply a model from this class and include the relevant diagram(s) for that model. And don’t forget to use the Claim, Evidence, Reasoning framework to present your solution. Phenomenon: Runaway Truck Ramp A truck was driving on a highway at 30 m/s when its brakes gave out. The driver steered it onto a “runaway truck ramp”, consisting of an upward ramp (rising 12 meters vertically over 120 meters horizontally), and ending with a compressible barrier which you can model as a giant spring with spring constant “k”. The compressible barrier can be compressed by a maximum 0.5 meters before it stops working. Graphic attached Values: Mass of the truck: 20 metric tons (1 metric ton = 1000kg). Mass of the driver: Choose a reasonable value. Truck Ramp Dimensions: 12 meters vertical, 120 meters horizontal Spring constant k= 6.0 x 107 J/m2. Part 1: Big…arrow_forward
