Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation:
The conjugate acid-base pairs for the reversible reaction of ammonium ion with cyanide ion have to be identified.
Concept Introduction:
Bronsted-Lowry acid: According to Brønsted-Lowry theory, an acid is a proton donor.
Bronsted-Lowry base: According to Brønsted-Lowry theory, a base is a proton acceptor.
When a Brønsted-Lowry acid donates a proton to a Brønsted-Lowry base, the base that
accepts the proton becomes a conjugate acid. Contrastingly, the acid that donated the
proton becomes a conjugate base.
(b)
Interpretation:
The conjugate acid-base pairs for the reversible reaction of carbonate ion with hydrogen chloride have to be identified.
Concept Introduction:
Refer to part a.
