Determine relevant and irrelevant information (Learning Objective 1)
O’Connor Frozen Foods purchased new computer-controlled production machinery last year from Advanced Enterprise. The equipment was purchased for $4.1 million and was paid for with cash. A representative from Advanced Enterprise recently contacted O’Connor management because Advanced Enterprise has an even more efficient piece of machinery available. The new design would double the production output of the equipment purchased last year but would cost O’Connor another $5.0 million. The old machinery was installed by an engineering firm; the same firm would be required to install the new machinery. Fixed selling costs would not change if the new machinery were to be purchased, but the variable selling cost per unit would decrease. Raw material costs (i.e., food ingredients) would remain the same with either machine. The new machinery would be purchased by signing a note payable at the bank, and interest would be paid monthly on the note payable. Maintenance costs on the new machine would be the same as the maintenance costs on the machinery purchased last year. Advanced Enterprise is offering a trade-in on the machinery purchased last year against the purchase price of the new machinery.
For each of the following costs, indicate whether or not each of the costs described would be relevant to O’Connor Frozen Foods’ decision about whether to purchase the new machinery or not.

Survey data indicate that this will have either a neutral or positive effect upon actual zoo attendance. The Web site will be professionally done and have an initial cost of $300,000. Upkeep, refreshing the videos, and developing videos for scientific research and entertainment will cost another $81,000 per year. - A local university decides to install motion detection light switches in the faculty offices. The cost savings associated with these switches is $1.44 per year for each year of a switch’s 15 year life. This gives a total cost savings of $21.60 per switch. The purchase cost of each light switch was $20. - Online Educators (OE), a not-for-profit firm exempt from taxes, is considering replacement of some electronic equipment associated with its distance learning (DL) facility. It spent $100,000 on the equipment 3 years ago and has depreciated it to a current book value of $40,000. Its end-of year O&M costs are $9,000 per year. Today’s newer technology, including high definition digital TV, has a price tag of $125,000 and, after some negotiation, OE negotiates a price of either (1) $108,000 in cash or (2) $91,000 in cash plus the current equipment as a trade-in. OE checked around and determined it could do no better by selling the soon-to-be obsolete equipment to someone else. OE will use a 5-year planning horizon. If the newer equipment is purchased, it will have end-of-year O&M costs of $8,000 and a salvage value of $20,000 at that time. If the old equipment is retained, it will have to be supplemented in years 3, 4, and 5 by leasing a hi-def add-on unit costing $30,000 per year…arrow_forward(Learning Objective 5: Use the COGS model to make management decisions)Sokol Antiques, Inc., began June with inventory of $48,400. Improving the effectiveness and economical use of fertilizer has been identified as an important step in the right direction. Engineers have designed an improved way to transport fertilizer and then to apply it directly at the point where crops are grown. Further development, assessment, and optimization of the necessary equipment is estimated to require $220,000 in year 1, increasing by a gradient of $80,000 in each of years 2, 3, and 4. Then, it will begin to decrease by $95,000 in years 5, 6, 7, and 8. Interest is 14% per year. Part c What gradient series, beginning with the $220,000 in year 1 is equivalent to these cash flows?
