Concept introduction: Chromosomes are present in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes, and make up the genetic material of an organism. Chromosomes are thin, thread-like structures visible at the time of cell division. Chromosomes are found in the higher eukaryotic organisms and their number varies from species to species. The chromosomes are diploid, 2n in somatic cells and haploid, and n in the reproductive cells.
