Question
Chapter 8, Problem 4AWK
Summary Introduction
To review:
The reasons behind standing for long periods may lead to circulatory issues. Also, wearing something tight on the legs may prevent these problems.
Introduction:
Workers who spend most of the time by standing develop pooling of blood at the lower end of the legs due to gravity. The entire body weight sits on the two legs of the human beings. This causes strain and tension on the legs of the species.

In human clinical practice, blood pressure is measured on the arm, listening for pulse sounds in the pocket of the elbow. From this location, we can measure blood pressure fairly precisely whether the person is sitting, standing, or laying down as long as the arm is kept at the person’s side. If the arm is moved, or if we choose the leg to measure blood pressure instead, the position of the person (sitting, laying down, standing) will dramatically change the blood pressure reading that we measure. Given what you understand about blood pressure, explain why we can accurately measure pressure in any position if the arm is kept at the side, but it changes so much if we were to measure from the legs.

LV End Diastolic Volume (mL)
Use the information in this paragraph and the image above to answer the question
below. This figure shows the relationship between EDV and SV. Curve 2 is
representatíve of a normal individual sitting on a bike, resting. There are two other
curves illustrated and there are multiple points landmarked with a "o" and the letters
"A to F". You can assume that the only changes in relevant variables are described in
each question. If a variable is not mentioned you can assume that it has not changed.
The starting point is "A". Select an appropriate pointif there was an increase in cardiac

Diastole and systole are terms that address the contracting and relaxing of the heart. Which of the following statements about diastolic and systolic blood pressure are true?
Select all that apply.
The diastolic blood pressure reading is the second number that is read and it's a measurement of the pressure of the arteries as the heart contracts and beats.
The systolic blood pressure reading is the first number that is read and it's a measurement of the pressure of the arteries as the heart contracts and beats.
The systolic blood pressure reading is the first number that is read and it's a measurement of the pressure in the arteries when the heart rests between beats.
Systole refers to when the heart contracts and blood flows from atria into ventricles.
The diastolic blood pressure reading is the second number that is read and it's a measurement of the pressure in the arteries when the heart rests between beats

- Which of the following statements best describes systolic blood pressure? Systolic blood pressure depends upon the force of the heart contractions - the stronger the contractions the higher the systolic pressure will be. Systolic blood pressure depends on how tightly the cuff of the sphygmomanometer is tightened. Systolic blood pressure depends upon the resistance of the blood vessels - the greater the resistance to blood flow the higher the systolic pressure will be. Which of the following is a sign of decreased circulation?arrow_forwardSitting motionless for long periods, as on airline flights, allows blood to pool and clots to form in legs. Long-distance flights cause clot formation in about 1 percent of air travelers, and the risk is the same regardless of whether a person is in a first-class seat or an economy seat. Physicians recommend that air travelers drink plenty of fluids and periodically get up and walk around the cabin. Given what you know about blood flow in the veins, explain why these precautions can lower the risk of clot formation.arrow_forward

- What do you think are the clinical symptoms indicating that a person requires the surgical implantation of a mechanical pacemaker?arrow_forwardDr. Bright and Dr. Idea have found a novel way to produce a machine to determine if a heart attack patient has additional blockage in the coronary arteries that may be caused by the surgical bypass procedure (CABG). The machine non-invasively measures arterial flow by using Doppler sonar to determine if the arteries are blocked. It can be used in a patient’s home, by itself, on post heart attack patients who may be at risk for additional heart attacks. It transfers the data to a monitoring station at a EMS facility for 24/7 monitoring. They have formed a company (The Bright-Idea Company), built a prototype and tested it in the lab on sheep and pigs. It worked great. Now they want to begin marketing it for use on humans.
