Concept explainers
The US Army helmet has evolved from sheet steel, to 29layer Kevlar, to the current Kevlar/Twaron advanced combat helmet. The helmet liners have also changed from compressed paper fibers, plastic, and rayon to sophisticated suspensionwebbing systems with chin straps. Exposure to braininjuring shock waves from explosions is a current concern. A variety of materials and designs have been proposed for helmet liner systems, including: air and fluidfilled (water or glycerin) chambers, layered composites with interfaces that reflect some of the incoming energy, foamed or cellular materials, aerogel, solid glass beads, hollow glass beads, and others. Select several of these and discuss the related pros and cons.

- Alplas Plastics uses an extruder in which the barrel diameter = 0.4 m and length = 6.0 m. The extruder screw rotates at 65 rev/min; it has channel depth = 0.02 m and flight angle = 16°. The plastic melt has a shear viscosity = 85 Pa-s. Determine: (a) Qmax and pmax; (b) the shape factor Ks for a circular die opening in which Dd = 0.009 m and Ld = 0.03 m; and (c) the values of Q and p at the operating pointarrow_forwardA medical pump weighs 220 lb. and has a critical acceleration of 50 g. The item measures 9x9x17 in. Using ARCEL Resin 2.2 lb/ft3. Find the necessary thickness and design the shape (length and width) of foam needed for each face of the item if it is expected that the item will suffer at most two face drops from a height of 24 inches in the distribution environment. Provide justification for your answer.arrow_forwardAn extruder has barrel diameter and length of 150 mm and 3.1 m, respectively. The screw rotational speed = 55 rev/min, channel depth = 8 mm, and flight angle = 18°. The plastic melt has a shear viscosity = 175 Pa-s. Determine: (a) the extruder characteristic, (b) the shape factor Ks for a circular die opening with diameter = 4.0 mm and length = 15 mm, and (c) the operating point (Q and p).arrow_forward
