Chapter 8, Problem 3AC
Summary Introduction

To review:

Whether a starving cell, which has become deprived of all the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) would be able to survive if placed in the glucose solution.

Introduction:

Every cell perform glycolysis to generate ATP, which itself requires ATP first. The cells perform two types of cellular respiration to generate ATP that are the aerobic respiration and the anaerobic respiration. When the oxygen is present in ample amount, the aerobic respiration is preferred and when the oxygen is present in the less quantity then anaerobic respiration is performed. If all the ATP is exhausted inside the cells, then it results in the cell death.

A human pancreatic cell obtains O2—and necessary molecules such as glucose, amino acids, and cholesterol—from its environment, and it releases CO2 as a waste product. In response to hormonal signals, the cell secretes digestive enzymes. It also regulates its ion concentrations by exchange with its environment.  Based on the structure and function of cellular membranes, describe how such a cell accomplishes these interactions with its environment.
When insulin responding cells remove the vesicles of glucose transporters from the plasma membrane, is this an example of exo- or endocytosis? Is this regulated or unregulated? Use the description above and your knowledge of the human body to explain how you got your answer.
magine a hypothetical situation in which a starving cell reaches the stage where every bit of its ATP has been depleted and converted to ADP plus phosphate. If at this point you place the cell in a solution containing glucose, will it recover and survive? Explain your answer based on what you know about glucose breakdown.
