A college admissions office is tasked with choosing the students who will be offered a spot at their school. Many schools claim they want diversity but grapple with the idea of how to have a truly diverse student body. You might want to consider how the admissions counselors can effectively produce a diverse student body while making sure that the process is fair to all. Think about how the number of White and Asian students is so much higher than other students. Why might this be the case? Think about how expensive college might be for some or how their culture does not always consider college a priority. Now consider how important a college education is in the United States. How might we give all students an equal chance at achieving this goal?
College admissions boards have to consider many factors when making the decision of whom to admit. These boards loot at transcripts, academic records, the activities in which the students are involved, leadership roles, sports team, the academic essay, awards, and conduct reports. The boards might also need to find a balance between males and females, in-state and out-of-state students, and students from minority backgrounds. Which of these factors do you think are most important for a college board to take into account?
