Answer to Problem 1RQ

The formation of air masses occurs when the source area is an extensive uniform area and the atmospheric circulation is relatively stagnant.

Explanation of Solution

The area in which air masses are formed is referred to as source regions. The characteristic of an air mass is largely determined based on the nature of the source region since the heating of atmosphere occurs mainly from below and its moisture is obtained due to evaporation that occurs at the surface of the Earth.

The two criteria that must be met for an area to be an air mass source region include the following:

1.    The area should be extensive and uniform. An area that is characterized by highly irregular topography or one that has a surface consists of both large areas of land and water does not generate uniform characteristics in the air above it.

2.    The formation of air mass occurs in an area where the atmospheric circulation is relatively stagnant. Hence, the air exists long enough above the region to reach some degree of equilibrium with the surface.
