Summary Introduction

To determine:

The evident major theme for the statement given in the book “by examining the compactness of a chromosome region (loose versus tightly wound), you can gain insight into whether the genes in that region are actively being used” and also explain how the statement relates to the theme.

Introduction:

DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is composed by the addition of a chain of nucleotides. The DNA is made of about 3 billion basepairs that is approximately 2 inches long. The alkaline protein (histone) tightly packed the DNA molecules and gives a structural unit which is known as nucleosomes. The packaging of histones creates two regions: heterochromatin or euchromatin region in chromosomes.

The heterochromatin region is a tightly packed region of chromosome which is transcriptionally inactive and darkly stained while the euchromatin region is loosely packed region of chromosome which is transcriptionally active and light stains.
