Explanation of Solution

Given information:

The rational function R(x)=2x27x4x2+2x15

Graph:

Step-1: The factors of 2x27x4 are 2x27x4=2x8x+x4=2x(x4)+1(x4)=(x4)(x+12) and factors of x2+2x15=x2+5x3x15 are (x+5)(x3)

The function is R(x)=2x27x4x2+2x15 becomes undefined, when x=5,3 . The domain of function R(x) is set of all real numbers except 5,3

Therefore, domain of the rational function R(x)=2x27x4x2+2x15 is (,5)(5,3)(3,) .

Step-2: x intercept is a point on the graph, where y=0

Therefore, R(x)=(x4)(x+12)(x+5)(x3)=0(x4)(x+12)=0

That is, x=4 and x=12 are x intercepts of R(x)

  y intercept is a point on the graph, where x=0

Therefore, R(0)=2(0)27(0)4(0)2+2(0)15=415=415

Thus, the function R(x)=2x27x4x2+2x15 has x intercepts (4,0) and, (12,0) and y intercept (0,415) . The multiplicity of (4,0) and (12,0) intercept is odd, graph of R(x) will cross x axis at point (4,0) and (12,0)

Step-4: As x=5,3 are zeroes of denominator and not of numerator, therefore x=5,3 are vertical asymptotes of R(x)

The multiplicity of 5 and 3 is odd; therefore, the graph of R(x) approaches to and on either side of vertical asymptotes.

Step-5: The degree of numerator is 2 and degree of denominator is 2 . As degree of the denominator equals to degree of numerator, the horizontal asymptote of G(x) is the ratio of leading coefficients of numerator and denominator

Therefore, the horizontal asymptote of R(x) is y=2

To check whether graph of R(x) intersects horizontal asymptote y=1, solve equation R(x)=2

  2=2x27x4x2+2x15

  2x2+4x30=2x27x4

  11x=26

  x=2611

That means, graph of R(x) intersects horizontal asymptote y=2 at x=2611

Step-6: The real zeroes of the numerator are x=12,4 ; the real zero of the denominator are x=5,3

The intervals using the numbers x=2,1,2 are (,5),(5,12),(12,3),(3,4),(4,) .

  Intervals(,5)(5,12)(12,3)(3,4)(4,)Test points610725Value of R(x)110951641516171120Location of graphAbove xaxisBelow xaxisAbove xaxisBelow xaxisAbove xaxisPoint on graph(6,1109)(1,516)(0,415)(72,1617)(5,1120)

Step-7: The graph of R(x) is below x axis for 3<x<4, the graph of R(x) approaches to as G(x) approaches to vertical asymptotes x=5,3 from left side.

The graph of function R(x) is above xaxis for <x<5, also the graph intersects the horizontal asymptote y=2 at x=2611, so graph of R(x) approaches to y=2 from above as x .

Graph of R(x) crosses y=2 from above x

The graph of R(x) is below x axis for 5<x<12, the graph of R(x) approaches to as R(x) approaches to vertical asymptote x=5 from right side.

The graph of R(x) is above x axis for 12<x<3, the graph of R(x) approaches to as R(x) approaches to vertical asymptote x=3 from left side

The graph of R(x) is above x axis for 4<x<, the graph of R(x) approaches to as R(x) approaches to horizontal asymptote y=2

Therefore, the graph of rational function R(x)=2x27x4x2+2x15 is

  Precalculus Enhanced with Graphing Utilities, Chapter 8, Problem 11CR

Interpretation:

The graph represents rational function R(x)=2x27x4x2+2x15
