Sickle cell anemia is an inherited disease in which red blood cells become distorted and
deprived of oxygen. A person with two sickle cell genes will have the disease, but a
person with only one sickle cell gene will have a mild, nonfatal anemia called sickle
cell trait. If we use s to represent
a sickle cell gene, and S a healthy gene, the
table shows the four possibilities for the
children of one healthy, SS parent, and one
parent with sicke cell trait, Ss. Find the
probability that these parents give birth to a
child who has sickle cell anemia.

Some traits of plants and animals depend on inheritance of a single gene. This is called Mendelian inheritance, after Gregor Mendel (1822-1884). Each of us has an ABO blood type, which describes whether two characteristics called A and B are present. Every human being has two blood type alleles (gene forms), one inherited from our mother and one from our father. Each of these alleles can be A, B, or O. Which two we inherit determines our blood type. Here is a table that shows what our blood type is for each combination of two alleles.

We inherit each of a parent's two alleles with probability 0.5. We inherit independently from our mother and father.
What is the probability that both children have different blood types?
Scientist Gregor Mendel (1822-1884) is often called the "father of modern genetics" and is famous for his work involving
the inheritance of certain traits in pea plants. Suppose that the genes controlling the color of peas are Y for yellow and y
for green. Each plant has two genes, one from the female (seed) and one from the male (pollen). The Y gene is dominant,
and therefore a plant with genes YY will have yellow peas, a plant with genes Yy or yY will have yellow peas, and a plant
with genes yy will have green peas.
If a plant with two yellow genes (YY) is crossed with a plant with two green genes (yy), the result is four hybrid offspring
with genotypes Yy. The offspring will be yellow, but will carry the recessive green gene.

Problem: To study the effectiveness of possible treatments for insomnia, a sleep researcher conducted a study in which four participants were instructed to count sheep (the Sheep Condition), four were told to concentrate on their breathing (the Breathing Condition), and four were not given any special instructions. The average number of minutes taken for each participant to fall asleep over the next seven days were 14, 28, 27, and 31 minutes for the Sheep condition; 25, 22, 17, and 14 minutes for those in the Breathing condition; and 45, 33, 30, and 41 for the Control condition. Using the .05 significance level, did the different techniques have different effects? Step 1: Restate the question as a research hypothesis and a null hypothesis about the populations. Pop 1: ??? Therefore, to determine if the two studies are inconsistent in their description of generation A we must compare the age groups from the two studies to see if either one includes people not included in the other study. In other words, we need to determine if the age ranges match up exactly when the year of the study is taken in to consideration. In the first study from 2005, generation A is defined to be people ages 17–28. Three years later, in 2008, the second study was published and defined generation A to be people ages ages 20–31. a) First we examine the low end of the age ranges. We note that someone who was 17 years old in 2005 would be ______ years old in 2008. b) Now we examine the high end of the age ranges. We note that someone who was 28 years old in 2005…arrow_forward
- There are X-Mart and Y-Mart convenience stores. It is assumed that each customer purchases once a week at one of the two supermarkets (but not both). In a study, a sample of 100 buyers was taken for 10 weeks. From this research it is known that if buyers go to X-mart store one week, 85 people will still buy at X-mart store the following week and if buyers go to Y-mart store one week, 70 people will still buy at Y-mart store. mart the following week. 1. Make a table and matrix of transition probabilities. 2. If John purchases at X-mart in the first week, what is the probability that Bob purchases at X-store in the third and fourth weeks?arrow_forwardProblem: A bank rewards its employees by giving awards to any employee who is cited by a customer for giving special service. Each award consists of two gift certificates contained in a sealed envelope. Each envelope contains certificates for one of the five following combina- tions of items:arrow_forwardEach of us has an ABO blood type. We get this blood type by inheriting two alleles-one from our mother and one from our father. Each of these alleles can be A, B, or O and the combination of the two that we inherit determines our blood type. The table below explains the combinations of alleles and the blood types those combinations produce. Blood Type Alleles Inherited A and A A and B A and O B and B B and O O and O A AB A B B O Harper has alleles A and O (therefore blood type A) and Taylor has alleles A and B (therefore blood type AB). On your own paper, fill in the chart of the possible combinations of alleles that their children could inherit: allele from Taylor A B allele from Harper A O Then list the possible blood types their children can have and the probabilities of each type.arrow_forward
- Researchers were interested in studying the relationship between living location (Manhattan vs. other boroughs of NYC) and anxiety. Researchers decided to randomly select 50 residents from Manhattan and 40 residents from the other four boroughs. All were free from anxiety disorders at the start of the study. They then followed the participants for three years to determine how many in each group developed an anxiety disorder. Among residents of Manhattan, 18 out of 50 developed an anxiety disorder. Among residents of the other four boroughs, 12 out of 40 developed an anxiety disorder. Question : The risk of developing an anxiety disorder for those living in Manhattan was _______ times the risk of developing an anxiety disorder for those living in the other boroughs.arrow_forwardExample 2.9 Suppose that a particular trait of a person (such as eye color or left handedness) is classified on the basis of one pair of genes and suppose that d represents a dominant gene and r a recessive gene. Thus a person with dd genes is pure dominance, one with rr is pure recessive, and one with rd is hybrid. The pure dominance and the hybrid are alike in appearance. Chil- dren receive one gene from each parent. If, with respect to a particular trait, two hybrid parents have a total of four children, what is the probability that exactly three of the four children have the outward appearance of the dominant gene?arrow_forwardHuman blood may contain either or both of two antigens, A and B. Blood that contains only the A antigen is called type A, blood that contains only the B antigen is called type B, blood that contains both antigens is called type AB, and blood that contains neither antigen is called type O. At a certain blood bank, 35% of the blood donors have type A blood, 10% have type B, and 5% have type AB. (i) What is the probability that a randomly chosen blood donor is type O? (ii) A recipient with type A blood may safely receive blood from a donor whose blood does not contain the B antigen. What is the probability that a randomly chosen blood donor may donate to a recipient with type A blood? (b) A box contains 10 fuses. Eight of them are rated at 10 amperes (A) and the other two are rated at 15 A. Two fuses are selected at random. (i) What is the probability that the first fuse is rated at 15 A?
